Hokkaido is the northernmost of Japan's 47 prefectures. Some international students that come to study in Hokkaido are surprised by the large amount of snow that falls as well as the below-freezing temperatures in winter. However, Hokkaido has activities international students can enjoy in every season while they pursue their studies. For example, there is horseback riding in the spring, rafting in the summer, canoeing among the fall colors, and skiing in the winter. This makes Hokkaido an exciting place to study for many international students. Hokkaido is also home to many universities that accept international students, the first and foremost being Hokkaido University, where professor William S. Clark once famously proclaimed, "Boys, be ambitious!"
