About the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering

With an emphasis on mathematics (the cornerstone of the sciences) and basic engineering (the cornerstone of engineering), this school provides education in the specialized fields that form the backbone of modern science and technology, including mathematics, information, communication, machinery, materials, electronic optics, and expressive media studies.

Students acquire the basics of science and engineering in addition to a wider liberal arts education, which will prepare them to think and act on a global level with the willingness and skills to address new fields from a creative science and engineering perspective.

English-based Undergraduate Program

Waseda University considers globalization as an issue of foremost importance, and seeks to foster thinkers who feel at home in different cultures around the world, can take action to solve various community problems, and can make contributions both in and outside of Japan for society as a whole.

In order to achieve this, the university established the International Program in September 2010, where students can acquire their degree taking only classes in English.

Take Waseda's first MOOC on edX!

Waseda University will offer a six-part online course on coastal disasters, taught in English and made available to everyone around the world. The course is titled: “Tsunamis and Storm Surges: Introduction to Coastal Disasters”.

This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is offered freely on the edX platform and is open worldwide to university students, high school students and anybody else interested in coastal disasters.

The course will introduce current coastal disaster research and damage mitigation engineering to young people in order to raise awareness and share scientific analysis of disasters such as the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, and the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

You can enroll now via the edX homepage.

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics covers a wide range of disciplines, including algebra, geometry and analysis, and numerical simulation. In addition to offering an in-depth pursuit of mathematics, the department provides students with advanced knowledge and mathematical sensibility, in order to understand the mathematical phenomena appearing in fields such as physics, science and engineering, and social science.

Department of Applied Mathematics
* Only offers programs in Japanese

Applied mathematics is the bridge that links mathematics to the natural sciences and engineering.

This department allows students to study fields such as the mathematic construction of material substances, mathematical finance, and information security while researching problems in various fields from a mathematical perspective.

Department of Applied Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering
* Only offers programs in Japanese

This department provides student with a basic knowledge of mechanical engineering and its techniques, and nurtures the ability to combine these in practice.

Main research areas include thermal fluids, design, precision machinery, machine materials, dynamic systems, system control, and aerospace.

Department of Electronic and Photonic Systems
* Only offers programs in Japanese

This department offers a wide range of courses on the basic technologies that support information technology, including nanoelectronics, bioelectronics, system design, LSI and optical electronics. The department proactively supports interdisciplinary research.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering
* Only offers programs in Japanese

Students and faculty pursue research in computer science, information engineering and communication engineering.

Students learn in joint programs that bring together the most cutting-edge information technology, including hardware, software, and computer networks, and acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to our advanced information society.

Department of Communications and Computer Engineering

This department provides students with knowledge of the structure of telecommunication systems and the mechanics of their operation, the principles and rules of system formation, application technology for constructing telecommunication services, and the physical laws that make system operation possible. It also fosters the skills necessary for work in these fields.

Department of Intermedia Art and Science
