[Faculty Features] An environment for wide-ranging exploration of languages and cultures

The Faculty of Humanities and Culture is comprised of the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, focusing on the study of Japan's language and culture, and the Department of History and Culture, focusing on the study of history, art, and archeology of both Japan and the world as a whole. These broadly diverse areas of study offer students opportunities to focus on a specialization that match their interests. Furthermore, classes from both departments can be combined in a crossover program.

[Popular with International Students] Acquire the basics of Japanese language education in our long-running department.

The Department of Japanese Language and Literature, under the Faculty of Humanities and Culture, is the oldest department at Showa Women’s University. This department offers a multifaceted study of the fundamentals of Japanese language and literature, and enrolls many international students.
Students aim not only to improve their Japanese proficiency but also to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to teach Japanese as a foreign language, with some aspiring to become Japanese language teachers in their home countries.
The Department of History and Culture provides in-depth study of Japanese, Western, and Eastern history, as well as cultural studies from perspectives such as art, folklore, cultural properties, archaeology, and geography.
Another attractive feature is the opportunity for students to simultaneously pursue three qualifications related to museums, libraries, and archives (curator, librarian, and archivist).
