The Faculty of Humanities and Culture is comprised of the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, focusing on the study of Japan's language and culture, and the Department of History and Culture, focusing on the study of history, art, and archeology of both Japan and the world as a whole. These broadly diverse areas of study offer students opportunities to focus on a specialization that match their interests. Furthermore, classes from both departments can be combined in a crossover program.
The Department of Japanese Language and Literature in the Faculty of Humanities and Culture has the longest history of any department in Showa Women's University. Many international students join this department, where Japan's language and culture can be studied from various viewpoints.
In addition to improving one's Japanese language skills, students can also learn to teach Japanese as a foreign language, which many students use to become teachers of Japanese back in their home countries.
Showa Women’s University offers an International Student Support Scholarship program.
Students with the Status of Residence of "Student" that are privately-funded can apply each year. Such international students must have a grade average of 75 or higher and an attendance rate of 85% or more. Selected students are provided with scholarships of 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen per month. (Excludes students receiving other government or private scholarships.)
When combined with existing tuition reduction programs, students can study for about half the normal cost.
Pursuing studies in linguistics, Japanese literature, and Japanese language education
Hands-on, experiential studies in history, culture, art, and archeology
This department's curriculum equips students with strong fundamentals and provides specialized studies in Japanese language and literature.
Students can deepen their knowledge of Japanese in 3 fields. In "Japanese Literature", literature from ancient texts to modern works are studied. "Japanese Language" covers the structure and characteristics of the language. In "Japanese as a Foreign Language", students learn methods for teaching Japanese to others as a second language.

In this department, students explore the history and culture of not only Japan, but of the whole world. Following the university's motto of "hands-on learning in the field", the department emphasizes on-site learning experiences such as practical lessons and field surveys. In addition to the study of history, the curriculum covers art, traditional cultures, archeology, and cultural assets. Students also cultivate skills in small-size classes useful in society for identifying and solving problems.
