The International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) offers liberal arts education at Yamanashi Gakuin University. With all courses offered in English, iCLA students learn across broad subject areas and develop the ability to integrate the knowledge they acquire in the classroom through creative, critical, independent and global thinking. This opens doors to wider career options and expands their potential. If you are looking for a truly international experience during your university studies, iCLA's campus and its course structure are designed so that both international and Japanese students learn together and share meaningful experiences as part of campus life.
Approximately 75% of the full-time iCLA faculty are foreign nationals and almost all classes are held in English. Through learning in English, as opposed to learning by separating specialist grammar and vocabulary particular to the discipline, students are able to enhance their ability to communicate using academic English. Japanese students learn along side international exchange students, providing the opportunity to learn from a more global perspective.
All students are required to study for one year at one of Yamanashi Gakuin’s international partner universities. Study abroad is a one-for-one program, so for every one student from iCLA that goes on a study abroad program, one international student comes to YGU. All partner agreements are cross-waiver-of-tuition programs, so iCLA students are not required to pay tuition fees during their study abroad. Students have a choice of 40 partner universities in America, Europe and Asia (as at May, 2016).
All international and Japanese iCLA freshmen are required to live in modern, on-campus residential halls. This is a great opportunity to make friends an prepare for the study abroad experience while learning about different cultures.
Liberal arts covers a wide range of disciplines and equips students with more than just knowledge. iCLA connects knowledge across the disciplines with the aim of cultivating the critical thinking skills necessary to tackle problems from a more complex and integrated viewpoint, as well as nurturing students to veer away from stereotypes in favor of becoming more emotive and expressive. Through the freedom of choosing any combination of courses they like over the four disciplines of Humanities, Social Sciences, Quantitative Reasoning & Natural Sciences, and Physical Education, students can discover their own potential and strive towards becoming the kind of international human resource capable of handling any situation in today’s every changing and diverse society.
Studying in smaller class numbers is essential to achieving maximum individual growth and a strong relationship between students and students and faculty. With a student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1, iCLA boasts this kind of small-class environment, and with the majority of classes being made up of approximately 20 students, the College is able to give more support to students in a nurturing educational environment. With a focus on student-faculty debate and independent thinking, students hone presentation and critical thinking skills.
The program develops students' ability to understand Japan with a cross-disciplinary approach that uses experiential Japanese arts and culture workshops and teaches Japanese language skills to an advanced level.
The basic feature of the iCLA (to be approved) curriculum is its diversity and liberal arts education designed to connect knowledge across the disciplines. iCLA offers an array of courses covering Humanities, Social Sciences, Quantitative Reasoning & Natural Sciences, and Physical Education. Students then connect the knowledge gained from each discipline through a Writing-Across-the-Curriculum (WAC) program and the Graduation Research Project (GRP), honing the critical thinking skills, communication and self-expression skills required in a future career as an international human resource capable of handling any situation in today’s ever changing and diverse society.
In addition, students whose English proficiency is not yet adequate to participate in a study abroad program, take English for Academic Excellence (EAE) in their first year, an intensive academic English program which separates students by level of English language proficiency so that each and every student can comfortably work to enhance their English ability
