Approximately 75% of the full-time iCLA faculty are foreign nationals and almost all classes are held in English. Liberal arts covers a wide range of disciplines and equips students with more than just knowledge. iCLA connects knowledge across the disciplines with the aim of cultivating the critical thinking skills necessary to tackle problems from a more complex and integrated viewpoint, as well as nurturing students to veer away from stereotypes in favor of becoming more emotive and expressive. Through the freedom of choosing any combination of courses they like over the four disciplines of Humanities, Social Sciences, Quantitative Reasoning & Natural Sciences, and Physical Education, students can discover their own potential and strive towards becoming the kind of international human resource capable of handling any situation in today’s every changing and diverse society.
Students have the opportunity to go on study abroad for a year at our partner universities. We have partnerships with more than 50 institutions spread across 30 countries/regions, most of which offer a wide selection of courses in English.*
You can choose from our expansive network of institutions worldwide to suit your academic goals. Friendly one-on-one advising sessions from faculty and staff are available to help students plan and make the most of their study abroad experience.
Through study abroad, you can expand your international perspective, travel to new and exciting destinations, and connect with other like-minded people across the globe to enrich your own intercultural experiences.
*Partnerships may only be limited to certain departments/faculties within the universities.
Studying in smaller class numbers is essential to achieving maximum individual growth and a strong relationship between students and students and faculty. With a student-faculty ratio of 13-to-1, iCLA boasts this kind of small-class environment, and with the majority of classes being made up of approximately 20 students, the College is able to give more support to students in a nurturing educational environment. With a focus on student-faculty debate and independent thinking, students hone presentation and critical thinking skills.
Our courses in the Japanese Language Program focus on all four skills: speaking, reading, writing, and listening, for well-rounded language acquisition. Not only that, but students are able to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture as they learn to discuss various cultural and social topics in Japanese. We keep our class sizes small in order to provide ample time for speaking practice and individualized instruction. Your language learning journey begins at iCLA, and our instructors are there to support you all the way.
Join our cultural workshops and experience the Japanese arts. You can learn how to perform tea ceremony in a traditional tatami room, go on excursions to the Mount Fuji region, write Japanese calligraphy, and so forth. Our workshops are taught by highly experienced and qualified instructors who are passionate about their art. Learning doesn’t just happen inside the classroom, so we encourage you to test your limits and try something new! Examples of cultural workshops that are offered in the Japan Area Studies Program can be found below.
The basic feature of the iCLA (to be approved) curriculum is its diversity and liberal arts education designed to connect knowledge across the disciplines. iCLA offers an array of courses covering Humanities, Social Sciences, Quantitative Reasoning & Natural Sciences, and Physical Education. Students then connect the knowledge gained from each discipline through a Writing-Across-the-Curriculum (WAC) program and the Graduation Research Project (GRP), honing the critical thinking skills, communication and self-expression skills required in a future career as an international human resource capable of handling any situation in today’s ever changing and diverse society.
In addition, students whose English proficiency is not yet adequate to participate in a study abroad program, take English for Academic Excellence (EAE) in their first year, an intensive academic English program which separates students by level of English language proficiency so that each and every student can comfortably work to enhance their English ability
