In our endeavor to foster truly international human resources capable of succeeding in the fields of health and social welfare sciences on a global stage, the Niigata University of Health and Welfare offers an education that cultivates strong communication skills amongst students and faculty, skills that will help graduates achieve their goals in this age of internationalization.
With eleven fields in four departments in the Master’s Program and three fields in one department in the Doctoral Program we accommodate the needs of a variety of disciplines. With graduate students already working in a wide variety of professions enrolled in these courses students can learn about how these different professions collaborate with the disciplines of health, medical care, welfare and sports. Students also work with undergraduate students on case-based studies, conducting group work and participating in the Integrated General seminar on Collaboration to learn about inter-professional work.

The objective of the Major in Rehabilitation Sciences is to improve the quality of, and positive collaboration between health and related services in response to the increasing needs of a rapidly aging society, needs such as the promotion of good health, prevention of sickness and disability, rehabilitation, enhancing QOL and support for self-reliance.
This course conducts education and research into rehabilitation、prosthetics & orthotics and assistive technology, and mind and body functions. It also aims to conduct research on the fostering of human resources engaged in professional education.
This Major is comprised of five fields - the Field of Physical Therapy, the Field of Occupational Therapy, the Field of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, and the Field of Prosthetics & Orthotics and Assistive Technology.
The objective of the Major in Health Sciences is to improve the quality of, and positive collaboration between health and related services in response to the increasing needs of a rapidly aging society, needs such as the promotion of good health, prevention of sickness and disability and enhancing QOL. This course conducts education and research into health sciences, with a focus on nutrition, sports and nursing. It also aims to conduct research on the fostering of human resources engaged in professional education.
This Major consists of three fields – the Field of Health and Nutrition, the Field of Health and Sports, and the Field of Nursing.
The objective of the Major in Social Welfare is to contribute to enhancing the specialist skills and quality of health, medical and social welfare professionals through conducting research and study into the policies aimed at supporting self reliance and improving QOL for patients and persons with disabilities. Research, which is carried out at 3 levels – national and local societies, facilities and organizations, and individuals and families - places an emphasis on the integrated relationship between the health, medical care and social welfare sectors.
This Major consists of two fields – the Field of Policies Planning and Administration for Social Welfare and the Field of Management for Social Welfare.
Medical services in Japan are at the stage of rapid progress with the advancement of diagnosis and treatment skills, the implementation of information technologies in hospitals, the arrival of super-aging society, increasing citizens’ demand for higher levels of medicine and medical care、higher demand for patient satisfaction and the introduction of DPC (diagnosis procedure combination), a new medical service insurance system. Hospital and medical information management isn’t just administration work to be carried out between doctors' practices. It requires highly specialized knowledge and skills.
This Major consists of the one field – Field of Health Information and Business Administration.
The field of Mind and Body Functions
This field addresses the multidisciplinary medical, healthcare and engineering issues related to the diverse education and research of mind and body functions. Students conduct educational research into the fundamental theories necessary to develop new treatments through their cultivation of the clinical problem solving skills needed to address motor disability, dementia, apraxia, agnosia, aphasia and other disorders related to higher brain dysfunction, and their minute analysis of exercise, movement, behavior and sensory functions from biomechanical, biochemical and electrophysiological perspectives.
The field of Welfare Ergonomics
This field scientifically examines how improved social welfare equipment such as braces, prosthetics and orthotics, shoes etc. can be better adapted to suit human needs. This research can then lead to the development of superior welfare equipment and enhance methods for rehabilitation and the promotion of good health. Students will utilize the latest computerized methods into body movement analysis and ergonomics.
The field of Community and Global Health and Welfare Science
With the aim of improving the health and social welfare of human populations at both a regional, national and international level, students study specialist disciplines, including preventative health science, public health and sanitation, international health science, health policy studies and social welfare studies. Research methods range from national to social sciences, depending on the research theme.
