Objectives for the Cultivation of Human Resources and Our Education and Research Programs

Our educational philosophy of "Theory and Practice" promotes practical learning that is backed by theories grounded in modern concepts. In this way we strive to cultivate talented human resources equipped with the technical skills required to respond to the modern needs of society.
It is important that we continue to elevate Japan’s technical prowess so that its presence continues to be felt throughout our globalizing world. This development of technology begins in the study of the fundamentals of “mono-dzukuri”, or the art of craftsmanship. In the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo City University, we promote the concept of “21st Century Engineering Education” for training human resources who are equipped with multi-faceted viewpoints that closely reflect the needs of modern society and who can support the future of Japan. By providing a highly-specialized curriculum founded on the fundamentals of “mono-dzukuri”, and by promoting outstanding breakthroughs in technological development, we will contribute to a healthy society and its sustainable development.

Highly-specialized Research Laboratories

In the second semester of the 3rd year of their studies, students affiliate themselves with a research laboratory that matches their interests and future aspirations. There, students will be able to carry out practical course studies while developing knowledge in their specialization as well as social skills. In their 4th year, students will carry out graduation research under the close supervision of the research laboratory’s faculty while developing the skills need to adapt and excel once out in society.

Theory and Practice

The educational philosophy of the Faculty of Engineering is “Learning through theory and practice”. Students cultivate solid fundamental skills through basic common courses combined with courses covering theory, which are taken in their first and second years. Students then continue on in experimentation, practical work and seminars to develop specialized and practical knowledge that applies those theories through hands-on learning.

Department of Mechanical Engineering
Training global-minded technical experts who can succeed on the world stage

The most important traits for an engineer in our age of globalization is the ability to identify problems, find solutions for them, and then be able to communicate those solutions to others in a manner that is easily understood. In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, students will not only learn how to think, write, and speak about topics logically in Japanese, but will also strengthen their global communication skills so that they may share their ideas with others in international society. Through experiential learning processes such as experimentation, field work, and graduation research, students will cultivate engineering design skills based on the processes of mechanics and design science. In this way students will be able to develop into highly-capable engineers equipped with the necessary knowledge together with technical and specialized skills.

Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering
Learning forward-thinking engineering that anticipates society's needs

To explain the role of mechanical systems engineering, consider work to improve an automotive engine. Instead of seeking to simply improve the performance of the engine power system, a mechanical systems engineer will examine the engine as an element of the automobile system as a whole, taking into account the usage environment and user needs in their work. In the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, studies in mechanical engineering are accompanied by practical studies in design engineering, control engineering, and electronic and electrical engineering. Through these studies we strive to realize coexistence and harmony between machines, the natural world, and the environments these machines are used in. We aim to train technical experts who can create systems and applications optimized for the needs of society.

Department of Nuclear Safety Engineering
Training highly-knowledgeable experts for the realization of safe nuclear power

There has been a great deal of debate surrounding the implementation of Japan's energy policies. Regardless, there are currently many nuclear power plants in operation in Japan and around the world, and accordingly there is a strong demand for the training of experts equipped with the specialized knowledge and skills needed to run them. The goal of the Department of Nuclear Safety Engineering is to train engineers who can advance the safety of nuclear power and sources of radiation. Students will learn specialized knowledge surrounding nuclear power through systematic study and experimentation, making full use of the results of research in the field accumulated over the last half-century.

Department of Medical Engineering
Protecting the lives and health of people from an engineering approach

Biomedical engineering seeks to solve various medical problems using an engineering approach. It is gaining attention as a field that has the potential to uncover new possibilities. Tokyo City University's Department of Biomedical Engineering cultivates engineers with multi-disciplinary skills who can tackle the various issues facing modern medicine and create new technologies for humans and other living things. Students will not only acquire knowledge and skills in the fields of medicine, physiology, and engineering, but also be instilled with ethical values so that they can contribute to the larger goals of preserving life and health.

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Supporting Japan's industries and society using the knowledge of electricity and electronics together with information processing

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering highly integrates study of the electrical and electronic technologies that support industries and people's everyday lives together with information processing technologies, which have become the basis of many advanced technologies. Through these studies, students will search for more effective applications and new possibilities for these technologies. Practical lessons in electrical and electronic engineering train students into engineers and researchers that are experts who can excel in their field.

Department of Chemistry and Energy Engineering
Realizing practical renewable energy applications through chemistry

While our energy needs are immense, we must face the reality that one day our fossil fuel resources will dry up. We are facing a modern energy crisis on a worldwide scale. The realization of renewable and sustainable sources of energy has become an urgent task for international society. Tokyo City University boasts some of Japan's most remarkable research achievements in the field of new energy sources. In the Department of Chemistry and Energy Engineering, we cultivate technicians and researchers equipped with advanced, specialized knowledge and skills related to chemistry and energy who can develop new technologies that can contribute to the sustainable future of humanity.

Department of Architecture
Cultivating architecture professionals equipped with engineering know-how and aesthetic sensibilities

In the Department of Architecture, we cultivate in our students a wide range of advanced knowledge and technical skills in the field of architecture including design, planning, structural engineering, environment, infrastructure, materials, and construction methods. In addition to engineering-based knowledge, we strive to train highly-imaginative engineers who can harmonize their creations with the environment and daily human activity. Students will become able to pursue safety, functionality, and comfort in their designs while expressing beauty, creativity, and individuality with an artistic sensibility.

Department of Urban and Civil Engineering
Training leaders who can shape the ideal cities of the future

Cities are deeply intertwined with our daily lives. In the Department of Urban and Civil Engineering, we cultivate in students an understanding of what makes for healthy, sustainable relationships between humans, natural environments, and social systems together with the ability to realize safer, more comfortable urban functionalities and environments. Additionally, we will provide students with the global perspective, knowledge, skills, and strong leadership for building and sustainably-managing cities and for developing cities that are resilient in times of disasters.
