Master’s Program

In the master’s program, we have established a Researcher Course, a Career Advancement Course, and a Lifelong Learning Course, allowing us to welcome students with a diverse range of goals.

Doctoral Program

The doctoral program is available for students who wish to delve deeper into their master’s program research. PhD students are enrolled for 3 years or more during which time they earn 12 or more credits in special lectures and write a doctoral thesis under the guidance of research supervisors, to be awarded a doctoral degree if their doctoral thesis is approved. As in the master’s degree, the doctoral program offers three majors—European and American Culture Studies, Japanese Studies, and Sociology—with entrance examinations undertaken separately for each major.

European and American Studies Major
The program explores interdisciplinary research from diverse perspectives, focusing on British and American, German and French, European, and comparative cultures.

1.Students can conduct specialized research on a diverse range of themes related to the English-speaking, German-speaking, and French-speaking regions.

2.The program serves as a setting for deeper learning and reflection, keeping in view the historical, social, and cultural affinities that characterize the Western cultural sphere.

3.The curriculum is organized around three core fields—"Language and Literature," "Thought and History," and "Comparative Literature and Comparative Culture"—allowing students to study and conduct research in light of their mutual interrelations.

Japanese Studies Major
The program is structured to enable students to acquire the research methods and specialized knowledge needed to address the diversity of Japanese and East Asian culture.

1.Students can engage in interdisciplinary and specialized research on Japanese linguistics, the history of Japanese thought, Japanese classical literature, modern Japanese literature, the socio-cultural history of Japan, the history of Japanese folklore, Japanese lifestyle culture, the history of Japanese performing arts, and East Asian culture, among other fields.

2.By completing the Japanese-language teacher training program, students can become highly qualified Japanese-language instructors.

3.A diverse student body is enrolled, including exchange students from Korea University in the Republic of Korea and Xi'an International Studies University in China, as well as international students from various other countries. Students can also study abroad at these overseas partner institutions.

Sociology Major
The program lets students study society—human communication in its totality—from macro structures to micro interactions, using sociology as its base, in historical and cross-disciplinary ways.

1.The program designates "systems," "media," and "culture" as key concepts of contemporary sociology and establishes a specialized field corresponding to each. In addition, students can pursue research in areas that cut across these fields, such as "gender."

2.Since its inception, the program has offered an entrance examination for working professionals, placing emphasis not only on training researchers but also on cultivating specialized professionals.

3.The program emphasizes the practice of social research that goes beyond classroom learning, enabling students to study research methods that incorporate sociological survey techniques such as questionnaire surveys, fieldwork, interview surveys, and media research.
