A liberal arts education featuring advanced specialization and boundless learning

Tsuda University's educational philosophy is to provide our students with a liberal arts education that deepens their knowledge and broadens their perspectives.
The College of Liberal Arts contains the five Departments of English, International and Cultural Studies, Mathematics, Computer Science, and International Cooperation and Multicultural Studies. Students develop their specialized knowledge within each department through a curriculum that emphasizes language skills to enable them to contribute to global developments. The college has an interdisciplinary curriculum, and students may enroll in courses outside of their department. This allows them to broaden their perspectives by studying subjects that interest them outside their major.

Department of English
Comprehensive development of English language four skills in an advanced program leading towards specialization in various fields

This department shapes students into talented individuals who can participate actively in society through communicating with the world's hundreds of millions of English speakers. To this end, students will cultivate insight, curiosity, and a broad perspective through the study of language, culture, literature, and society.
Students engage in a comprehensive study of the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the first and second years of English learning. Work continues on academic writing, presentation, and discussion skills in the third and fourth years, while students pursue their studies in specialized subjects to cultivate the ability to think and share their thoughts and ideas in English.

Department of International and Cultural Studies
Developing solid skills through small-size seminars and studying two or more foreign languages

Students cultivate comprehensive analytical and deliberative skills through studying government, law, economics, and diplomacy from diverse perspectives and from learning about cultural and social backgrounds issues that play a role in today's international society. In this way, they can become highly-skilled individuals who can contribute to international exchanges and developments and promote peace around the world.
A range of specialized subjects and small-size seminars are offered throughout the four-year curriculum during which students will cultivate the capacity to address and explain issues from multiple perspectives in their own words.
In addition to English, students choose a second foreign language from among six foreign languages to further broaden their perspectives.

Department of International Cooperation and Multicultural Studies
Learning about Multicultural co-existence ( or "Japanese style multiculturalism" ) and international cooperation to realize a more harmonious society

The problems facing contemporary society that demand our attention, including issues caused by social structures and cultural differences as well as matters of international cooperation and aid, are diverse. Through fieldwork and high-level seminar tuition, students will gain a strong command of the practical language and communication skills and advanced specialist knowledge and analytical skills necessary to address such problems. The result will be talented human resources able to propose new and original approaches to contemporary problems who contribute to the realization of a more harmonious society.

Department of Mathematics
Actively pursuing a broad range of specialized areas of learning in the field of mathematics

Mathematics is a foundation for the study of the natural world . Starting from that foundation, students will thoroughly explore the field and cultivate the means to apply mathematics in direct and indirect ways. Students engage in active learning under the guidance of faculty in small-size seminars that comprehensively cover fundamental concepts in order to cultivate thinking skills and nurture an advanced understanding of mathematics. Specialized subjects cover the entire field, from ancient texts to the latest advancements in mathematics. In this way, students can pursue their own studies in mathematics, whether this involves referencing ancient Greek texts or working with cutting-edge computers technology.

Department of Computer Science
Learning fundamental technologies and acquiring the capacity to respond to advances in the field

Our increasingly information-based society requires human resources equipped with specialized knowledge in computer science. With this in mind, the Department of Computer Science strives to train talented individuals who can excel in the field. Students start by acquiring fundamental knowledge and concepts, and then study programming, from basics to applications. Furthermore, in small-size seminars, discussions are held on technical documents to nurture students' knowledge acquisition strategies. Elective subjects cover the five fields of systems, networks, media, communications, and mathematical modeling. Through these studies students can cultivate the flexible skill sets they need for playing vital roles in society.
