Striving for mutual understanding though learning in-depth about the cultures of Japan and other countries

In the Department of International Cultural Exchange students will learn about Japan and other countries as they deepen their international understanding. The Department endeavors to produce female leaders capable of working both in Japan and around the globe, in an ever-increasing globalized era.

Department of Japanese Studies
In the Department of Japanese Studies students gain a deep understanding and global perspective so that they can accurately transmit Japanese culture to those abroad.

1. Comprehensive learning from a cultural perspective
The Department offers a rich curriculum in which students learn about Japan from a variety of perspectives, including art and thought, folklore and history and contemporary society. Students can focus their studies on the areas they are most interested in.

2. Learning about Japanese culture through both theory and practice
Students learn about traditional customs such as tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy and Yuusoku Kojitsu and take practical classes as part of the common coursework. In addition to the practical subjects the Department also offers lecture classes so that students can accurately learn the theory behind their practical experiences. This unique curriculum aims to use such theoretical and practical coursework to nurture within students a deeper and more accurate knowledge of traditional Japanese customs.

3. Cultivating strong communication skills
Students will also acquire the communication skills, information processing skills and necessary language ability to be able to transmit their knowledge of Japanese culture to those abroad.

4. Learning freely across different departments
Students aren’t just limited to the major courses in the Department of Japanese Studies. They can also obtain credits by taking the common courses and major courses they are interested in from other departments. This will help students broaden their knowledge and open more doors into the future.

Department of Intercultural Communication
Equipping students with strong communication skills and an international perspective

1. Learning from a global perspective
Being knowledgeable about various cultures is the stepping-stone to understanding the international community. For this reason students will chronologically learn area studies and cultural understanding covering the entire world.

2. Researching international relations
As a foundation for their research into international relations, students will study a broad variety of topics, including language and communication, politics, economics, management, law, environmental studies and mass communication. From there they will then research more deeply into the areas of international relations and international politics.

3. Practical seminar classes to cultivate strong problem solving skills
From the 3rd year students participate in small-group seminar classes, discovering topics they are interested in, finding problems related to this topic and then thinking about ways to solve them. Specialist faculty from each department provide students with the backup and support required to ensure their research is thorough.

4. High degree of freedom to take courses from other departments
In addition to the major courses in the Department of Intercultural Communication, students can also take other courses they are interested in from the common subjects, courses in other departments and even from other universities. This allows students to really obtain a broad understanding of their chosen field.
