Soka University is highly rated for its "environment", ranking second in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The Faculty of International Liberal Arts (FILA) offers all classes in English, providing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary education that spans fields such as business, humanities, international relations, education, and psychology. This approach helps students develop the ability to analyze complex international issues from multiple perspectives. After building a strong foundation in their first two years, students in their third year and beyond join small, specialized seminars of 5-6 students. Here, they engage in in-depth, specialized research with world-class faculty, fostering individuals who can contribute to solving global challenges. Through our unique scholarship program for international students, we offer this high-quality education at an unparalleled low cost of approximately 300,000 yen per year (scholarship conditions apply).
Mandatory Overseas Fieldwork 1
In their first year, all FILA students participate in a mandatory two-week overseas short-term study program. Each student chooses one destination from among several options, such as Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, to gain first-hand exposure to pressing social issues and culture of the local area. This experience connects classroom learning with real-world contexts, preparing them for more specialized studies in their second year and beyond.
Optional Overseas Fieldwork 2
In their second year, students can opt to participate in additional fieldwork in locations such as Malaysia. Through group projects where they research issues unique to the region and propose solutions based on interviews conducted on-site, students gain practical skills and international experience that cannot be acquired in the classroom.
Mandatory Fieldwork Within Japan
Students can gain valuable experience engaging directly with the forefront of Japanese business and culture through this fieldwork, featuring local challenges in the university’s surrounding region, Japan’s top companies, or inbound strategies of tourist destinations. This experience contributes to the development of their future careers.
Please note that the above-mentioned fieldwork destinations may be subject to change.
Team Teaching seminars conducted by two to three professors in small groups examine issues from multiple discipline perspectives. Students also hone their ability to communicate in English and develop multicultural presentation skills.
While all subjects are taught in English, FILA international students also learn practical Japanese. We offer classes for a wide range of proficiency levels, from beginner to advanced, allowing students to start their studies with confidence. The goal is for students to achieve the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2 level, a valuable asset for working in Japan or at Japanese companies abroad in the future, as well as for daily life and interaction with Japanese students.
Our graduates leverage their practical education to thrive in a wide range of fields. They find success in global companies located in Japan and abroad, at Japanese companies abroad, and in non-profit organizations. Many also pursue further specialization by enrolling in prestigious graduate schools in Japan and around the world.
While it typically takes six years to earn a Bachelor's and then a Master's degree in Japan, our faculty offers an accelerated program. Students who meet specific academic requirements can begin taking graduate-level courses in their fourth year. This allows them to earn both a bachelor's degree and a Master's in International Peace Studies in five years, providing a significant advantage to those aiming to pursue a doctorate or work for international organizations or global companies.
