Seinan Gakuin University is a humanities-focused university with a long history of international exchange and cooperation. The international exchange program, now managed in the Center for International Education, is one of the oldest such programs in Japan. The location of the University, in Kyushu's largest city, known as the "gateway to Asia " offers students an exciting environment in which to learn and grow.
Seinan Gakuin University is situated adjacent to one of Fukuoka City’s key waterfront areas, Seaside Momochi, amid a superb environment incorporating academic and cultural facilities, information hubs, and educational and research centers. In addition to its 12 courses of study in seven undergraduate departments - Theology, Foreign Language Studies, Commerce, Economics, Law, Human Sciences, and Intercultural Studies - SGU also offers 8 courses in 7 graduate divisions including Law, Business Administration, Foreign Language Studies, Economics, Theology, Human Sciences and Intercultural Studies. With a total graduate and undergraduate student population of about 8,500, we are consistently ranked as one of the leading privately-funded universities in Western Japan.
Ever since our establishment we have employed a high number of foreign educational faculty, and were the first school to incorporate English-language education into our curriculum. Likewise we were the first school to establish a foreign exchange program with universities overseas, and have established a long tradition of welcoming students from other lands. We have a reputation as a school delivering excellent linguistic training in a richly international environment. We also stress the provision of a well-rounded education based on Christian principles, with special courses on the study of Christianity, and chapel. Our goal is to nurture graduates capable of contributing to local and international society through a spirit of service to others.

With a smartphone, you can instantly access information from all over the world, and voice translation is even possible now. If you were asked what the point of learning a foreign language is in these times, what would your answer be? Having been asked the same question over and over again, I thought back to my school days. I had complex feelings about the fact that I had never accomplished anything on my own, so I decided to study in the United States. I was greatly influenced by the young American man I met there. At first, my English wasn't very good and I couldn’t communicate as well as I wanted to. However, as I gradually started to gain confidence in expressing myself using English, I was able to have more serious interactions with him-even confrontations. We fought and made up many times. Through such ordinary daily moments, I was able to deepen my understanding of different cultures and values. One day, my friend suddenly decided to go to a conflict zone to get involved in conflict resolution activities. I really wanted to know what he was thinking. My time in the US was an experience where people with different birthplaces, upbringings, native languages, and even destinies met by chance and connected emotionally. I realized that the more you learn about international issues such as poverty, conflict, and disasters through your friends, the less they will be just someone else's problem. My experience made me ask myself: “What can I do? What kind of life do I want to live?” Learning a foreign language made me realize my potential that I hadn’t understood before. Why not find hope in the possibility of learning a foreign language (such as English, French, or Japanese as a foreign language) and changing your inner self at the Department of Foreign Language Studies? Now is the time to Unlock Your Potential.
The Department of Foreign Language Studies aims to unlock students’ potential by developing their practical language skills and by cultivating their expertise in a broad range of foreign language-related studies.
In their first year, students concentrate on improving their English ability by strengthening and applying the four core skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and on beginning the study of French.
A flexible curriculum allows students to draw on all three subject areas to create an individual program of study that will both broaden their interests and deepen their expertise, in preparation for advanced individual research in third and fourth-year seminars.
In addition to Seinan Gakuin University’s foreign exchange programs and short-term overseas language and professional skills training programs, the Department of Foreign Language Studies also offers four exclusive overseas study programs, as well as a partnership with Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. These programs allow students a wide variety of opportunities to put their learning into practice, and to expand their experience of foreign language studies both in Japan and around the world.

English Studies Course Group include linguistics and advanced language practice, as well as in-depth study of British and American literature and culture, and that of the wider English-speaking world.
French Studies Course Group focus both on the acquisition of practical communicative abilities to enable students to reach a business level of French and also on providing a broad-based understanding of French culture.
Classes in global communication studies allow students with advanced language skills the opportunity to take courses taught in English and/or French to develop greater competences in communication and an understanding of global issues.
