In order to take one's place in this evolving global society, it is essential to develop new modes of free thinking. Since its founding in 1880 under the principles of "Freedom and Progress", Hosei University has graduated talented individuals who have gone on to promote societal reform in a wide range of fields, as well as contribute achievements in culture and sports. We nurture the talents and skills of our students so that they can excel on the global stage with our numerous fields of study in 15 faculties and over 200 clubs and unique extracurricular activities, all in 3 distinctive campuses located in Tokyo.
Diverse individuals gather here from throughout Japan and around the world.

Leading-edge bioscience research focusing on 3 disciplines: life, botany, and matter

The Faculty of Bioscience and Applied Chemistry approaches issues of life and the environment in order to support the future of our planet. There are many issues facing our world today, such as food supplies in the face of increasing populations, environmental problems caused by industrialization, and energy issues. Study in bioscience can provide solutions to these problems, and because of this there is a great deal of anticipation for what kind of research and technologies it may bring about. There are also urgent efforts underway to realize harmony between humanity and the environment and the planet's resources. These efforts include using modern methods of chemistry towards establishing technological applications for developing environmentally-friendly new forms of matter, environmental protections, and new sources of energy.
The Faculty of Bioscience and Applied Chemistry nurtures skilled technicians and researchers capable of meeting the needs of the 21st century through research in the 3 disciplines of life, botany, and matter by providing them with leading-edge knowledge in bioscience. Previously, there were only two departments in the Faculty of Bioscience and Applied Chemistry, but from 2014, the Department of Frontier Bioscience and the Department of Clinical Plant Science became independent programs. Combined with the Department of Chemical Science and Technology, an even wider range of educational and research opportunities await students.


Department of Frontier Bioscience
Experience a future-minded bioscience program in an environment that uses cutting-edge technologies, materials, and equipment

With the revealing of the structures of the genome of humans and other living things, bioscience is reaching a turning point. There is a demand for new fields of research in cellular and molecular biology as the functions of cells and the molecules that make them up are discovered and explanations of their collective functions are pursued. The formulation of "Frontier Bioscience" is a new form of science that concerns function as applied to particular aspects of cellular and molecular studies. The Department of Frontier Bioscience provides education in this cutting-edge field with a focus on three aspects: genomes, proteins, and cells. Students will perform specialized, practical learning from their first year in a learning environment with the latest technologies, materials, and equipment. Laboratory research is possible from the second year, allowing students to perform thorough research from an early stage of their education. There is also an emphasis on acquiring the scientific English language skills that are essential for deepening one's knowledge in relevant areas.

Department of Chemical Science and Technology
Learning how to solve environmental and energy problems through chemistry in order to realize a more environmentally-friendly society

The Department of Chemical Science and Technology uses a platform of "Green Chemistry" to find solutions to environmental and energy issues towards realizing a more sustainable society. Fundamentals in the 5 fields of organic chemistry, non-organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and chemical engineering are combined with studies of the relationships between organisms, environments, and matter. Through systematic learning in 3 course programs of specialization in courses related to Green Chemistry, an emphasis is placed understanding the effects chemical substances and industrial processes have on the natural world and on organisms, the re-use of resources, and how environmental harmony can be achieved. Furthermore, students will study and research new chemical processes for addressing environmental issues in fields such as material design which can be used to minimize environmental impact.

Department of Clinical Plant Science
Specialized education and research towards protecting and utilizing plants in Japan's only clinical plant science research institution

The field of clinical plant science concerns researching the causes of plant diseases, as well as their diagnosis and treatment. The current world population stands at about 7 billion people, and it is projected to grow past 9 billion people by 2050. It is inevitable that crop yields will fail to keep pace and food supplies will dwindle. The damage caused to crops by insects and invasive plants, as well as diseases and damage that occur during storage, are destroying 30 to 40 percent of the world's food production. Addressing these issues now will lead towards solutions for food-related problems in the future. Clinical plant science knowledge and technology are required in today's society for addressing environmental matters such food supply issues and energy problems. In response to these needs, in 2014 the clinical plant science specialization of the Department of Frontier Bioscience was made into its own program as the Department of Clinical Plant Science. Enhanced learning is provided for talented individuals looking to enter specialized professions while further developing education and research in the field of clinical plant science.
