The Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences covers 6 key categories: 1) the natural environment, 2) humans, 3) materials, 4) energy, 5) information, and 6) buildings and man-made structures. The main themes covered in each course are humans and the natural environment in the Division of Geography, the natural environment and man-made structures in the Division of Civil and Environmental Engineering, humans, information and man-made structures in the Division of Architecture and Urban Studies, materials and energy in the Division of Applied Chemistry, and the natural environment, humans and information in the Division of Nature and Culture Based Tourism. Students carry out in-depth study and specialist research into how these themes relate to the various environmental issues.
Students will examine the relationship between human activity and environmental issues by investigating, analyzing and researching the various fields related to the global environment and involved with human activity, such as geography, climate, vegetation, as well the characteristics of regional cultures, society and economies. This course with an emphasis on field work, which takes advantage of our 5 senses, is an exciting study into the past and future of our planet and issues facing humankind.
The Division of Civil and Environmental Engineering aims to produce talented people who have the independence, dynamism and creativity to successfully approach various social issues such as sustainability, safety and natural disaster prevention from the three disciplines of social infrastructure, environmental systems and disaster prevention.
In this course students learn not only about the architecture of individual buildings, but also about urban environment, learning from versatile faculty and acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to resolve issues relating to architectural design and urban planning. In addition to general architecture studies, students also learn the theories and skills related to urban studies, harnessing the knowledge and critical thinking ability required to utilize these skills and understand and evaluate how they work in society.
The Division of Applied Chemistry offers a unique educational program based on a wide range of applied chemistry, from basic to advanced areas. The goal of the division is to train highly qualified engineers and researchers who will lead academic societies and business in such fields as chemical materials and devices.
Tourism is a multifaceted and integrated field and this Nature and Culture-based Tourism course is the first of its kind in Japan, pioneering the new discipline of ‘Tourism Science’. Students study a broad range of subjects through the approaches and studies of engineering, science and information. This course aims to train talented individuals capable of creating and ensuring proper utilization of tourism areas, rangers in charge of preserving the natural environment, and leaders capable of developing tourism plans and successfully carrying out the overall management of these plans.
