Making our Future Stronger Through the Traditions of Philosophy

The beginnings of Toyo University can be found in the Philosophy Academy, which was established in 1887 by the philosopher Enryo Inoue. In an era where only the elite of society were able to receive an education, his school was a place for the higher education of all people.

Carrying out research and development under the theme of "Life" that contributes to the Earth's environment

Biotechnologies that are being developed, such as genetic manipulation and cellular fusion, draw on knowledge from the fields of science, agriculture, physics, and medical studies. These revolutionary technologies have contributed greatly to fields of medicine, food supply, and environmental science. These fields of study which have given rise to biotechnology are brought together in the discipline of Life Sciences
Toyo University has led the way in higher education with its establishment of the Faculty of Life Sciences. Phenomena of "Life" are explored starting at the molecular level, going from the microscopic up to the whole person. Toyo Universities is also one of the few institutions in Japan that carries out research of micro-organisms in extreme environmental conditions.

Solving the mysteries of life to realize a richer human society

There remain many unknown areas in the study of life phenomena, such as how certain microscopic organisms can exist in extreme environments, and the advanced mechanisms of the human brain. Progress in bioscience is not merely the solving of these life mysteries, but it is also essential for the creation of new industries that provide technological solutions that enrich human existence and contribute to the conservation of the Earth's environment. The objective of the Department of Life Sciences is to provide a leading-edge biosciences education to students that give them the knowledge and skills to address various issues facing global society and excel in a wide variety of fields.

Department of Applied Biosciences
Cultivating creative thinking skills to contribute to the development of global society

The Department of Applied Biosciences follows the Faculty's educational philosophy of training students to comprehensively understand life to develop creative thinking skills and advanced theoretical perspectives with an international approach. By applying the advanced functions possessed by living creatures, students will become able to develop and implement environmentally-friendly creative approaches that contribute to the development of global society. Attention is also given to the creation of regional development by preparing students with the initiative to assist in revitalizing communities and contribute to local industries.
