In the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo City University, we promote the concept of “21st Century Engineering Education” for training human resources who are equipped with multi-faceted viewpoints that closely reflect the needs of modern society and who can support the future of Japan. By providing a highly-specialized curriculum founded on the fundamentals of “mono-dzukuri”, and by promoting outstanding breakthroughs in technological development, we will contribute to a healthy society and its sustainable development.
In the second semester of the 3rd year of their studies, students affiliate themselves with a research laboratory that matches their interests and future aspirations. There, students will be able to carry out practical course studies while developing knowledge in their specialization as well as social skills. In their 4th year, students will carry out graduation research under the close supervision of the research laboratory’s faculty while developing the skills need to adapt and excel once out in society.
The educational philosophy of the Faculty of Engineering is “Learning through theory and practice”. Students cultivate solid fundamental skills through basic common courses combined with courses covering theory, which are taken in their first and second years. Students then continue on in experimentation, practical work and seminars to develop specialized and practical knowledge that applies those theories through hands-on learning.
The most important traits for an engineer in our age of globalization is the ability to identify problems, find solutions for them, and then be able to communicate those solutions to others in a manner that is easily understood. In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, students will not only learn how to think, write, and speak about topics logically in Japanese, but will also strengthen their global communication skills so that they may share their ideas with others in international society. Through experiential learning processes such as experimentation, field work, and graduation research, students will cultivate engineering design skills based on the processes of mechanics and design science. In this way students will be able to develop into highly-capable engineers equipped with the necessary knowledge together with technical and specialized skills.

Instead of seeking to simply improve the performance of the engine power system, a mechanical systems engineer will examine the engine as an element of the automobile system as a whole, taking into account the usage environment and user needs in their work. In the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, studies in mechanical engineering are accompanied by practical studies in design engineering, control engineering, and electronic and electrical engineering.
