Fostering human resources who can learn from and contribute to the world

Since its establishment in 1927, Shibaura Institute of Technology has pursued its founding mission of fostering practice-oriented engineers who can learn from and contribute to society, and worked to cultivate science and engineering talent to support Japan’s economy.
In 2014, the university was selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Top Global University Project, which provides prioritized support for universities to advance internationalization through partnerships with universities outside Japan and the pursuit of world-class education and research. SIT was one of just 37 out of the 781 universities in Japan to be selected under the project. We aim to provide a truly unique learning environment designed to foster "human resources who can learn from and contribute to the world."

Educational Philosophy of the College of Engineering

Guided by its mission to develop innovative individuals with the basic academic intellect to contribute to society, the College of Engineering has sought to address the overemphasis on knowledge acquisition in conventional university education, and re-developed its teaching to be guided by the question of how rather than simply what to manufacture. The College’s educational policy is based on three stages as described below.
The first stage is to elucidate the purposes of applying engineering and technology in the various areas of the engineering discipline. This requires students to survey the significant breakthroughs and deficiencies in the history of humankind. The second stage is to address the question "why" in order to identify the different stages of social requirement, desire, and specific demand that call for engineering solutions. True professional engineers would not comply unconditionally with all demands: education in our College therefore equips students with insights that enable critical engagement, verification, and implementation. The third stage of our education involves studying the innovative aspects of the question, "how to manufacture?" with a view to fostering creativity.
