Master's Program

Students in the Master's Program will acquire an advanced education in their field of study based on the groundwork learning laid in the undergraduate program, as well as a wide breadth of related basic and applied knowledge. The program endeavors to train highly specialized professionals who can take leading roles in our international, knowledge-based society and creative researchers that are well-equipped to carry out world-class work in their field.

The Master's Program places an emphasis on maintaining consistency with the specialized learning that took place in the undergraduate program. While each course provides specialized study based on the foundation of knowledge gained in the undergraduate program, the program is designed so that students gain a foothold in a wide range of related fields through the study of basic and applied topics. The program is completed with the submission of a master's thesis based on 2 years of research in the program (standard term length), upon which a Master of Science or Master of Engineering degree is awarded.

Doctoral Program

The basic and applied knowledge and academic skills cultivated in the Master's Program is put towards developing deep insight into the student's field of specialization, an understanding of related fields and the ability to apply them, and the ability to realize continued, persistent self-improvement. Through these efforts, participants will be prepared with the knowledge to respond to new academic trends and developments in society and industry, growing into researchers and technicians capable of breaking new academic ground and creating new technologies and industries.

The Doctoral Program is available only in the Program in Science and Engineering. Knowledge in basic and applied sciences cultivated in the Master's Program is applied towards an educational system for deepening expertise in one's field of specialization and performing interdisciplinary research that combines science and engineering. The program is completed with the submission of a doctoral thesis based on 3 years of research in the program (standard term length), upon which a Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Sciences, or Doctor of Engineering degree is awarded.

Academics and Research for International Students

Saitama University offers two programs where coursework and research are carried out completely in English and where no Japanese language proficiency is required: the International Graduate Program on Civil and Environmental Engineering (Master's Program), and the International Graduate Program on Environmental Science (Doctoral Program). There is also support for Japanese language study by international students, and many international students at Saitama University study Japanese and return to their home countries with a greater understanding of Japanese culture.

Achievements in International Student Education

Since 1992, when the education of international students at Saitama University began in earnest with the introduction of the International Graduate Program on Civil and Environmental Engineering, many students from countries around the world, including Monbukagakusho (Japanese Government-sponsored) students, have come to study in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering. Saitama University's abundant experiences and achievements in international student education have been highly evaluated inside and outside of the university. As a result of these achievements, the Asian Development Bank designated the Graduate School to receive ADB Japan Scholarships, and every year approximately 15 ADB scholarships are awarded to Master's Program students in the fields of civil and environmental engineering. There are also many enrolled students with scholarships from organizations such as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). There are also UNESCO lecture programs and a variety of other education and research activities underway.
