Chuo University was founded as the Igirisu Horitsu Gakko (the English Law School) in 1885, through efforts led by a group of 18 young attorneys, with a founding spirit of providing practical education based on British empiricism and rationalism. To this day Chuo maintains a tradition of nurturing human resources with an emphasis on practical educational approaches.
In the 128 years since its founding, the former Igirisu Horitsu Gakko has grown into a comprehensive educational institution, currently boasting six faculties, eight graduate schools, three professional graduate schools, nine research institutes, four affiliated high schools, and two affiliated junior high schools.
