Nurturing creators who can give new value to our society
After its founding in 1935, Tama Art University has gone on to produce large numbers of outstanding artists who have succeeded in various genres around the globe, including Nobuo Sekine and Kishio Suga, key members of the Mono-ha, an artistic style that fused natural and industrial materials, and which became very popular in the United States.
Also amongst its graduates are Hideo Takeda, who held the world’s first solo exhibition as a cartoonist at the British Museum, and Hidetoshi Nagasawa, an architect and sculptor who was active on a global scale from his home in Italy. In more recent years graduates have included the likes of Yuko Mohri, who was selected as one of the “40 under 40 Asia Pacific: The Most Inspirational Young People in the Asia Pacific Art World” in the “Apollo Magazine”, and a large number of other artists successfully taking on the genre of media art.
In the fields of industry and design, graduates range from designers active on a global scale, such as fashion designer Issey Miyake, product designer Naoto Fukasawa, designer of the Softbank logo Takuya Oonuki, and Uniqlo brand designer Kashiwa Sato, through to graduates who have become top creators at some of Japan’s most recognizable companies, including Toyota, Sony and Rakuten.
Spread over two campuses, located in Hichioji City and the Setagaya district in Tokyo, Tama University is a comprehensive university with a graduate school and ten departments in art, design and physical expression, including painting, sculpture, craft, design, architecture, imagery, theater dance and art.
