Students refine themselves to “Be a Light to the World.”

Showa Women's University (SWU) founded in 1920 is located in Tokyo, Japan, minutes away from the bustling downtown Shibuya. Since the founding, its mission has been to educate women to become self-reliant and to take a significant role in society under the motto “Be a Light to the World.” A wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses and programs are offered to over 5,400 students, including those from other countries.
Undergraduate majors offered are Japanese Language and Literature, English Communication, History and Culture, International Studies, Psychology, Social Welfare, Contemporary Liberal Arts, Elementary Education, Human Environmental Science and Design, Human Health and Design, Food Science and Nutrition and Business Design.

■Academic & Lifestyle Support Systems

• Center for International Exchange (CIE)
CIE assists international students with student life. Feel free to talk to a staff member about immigration procedures, life in Japan, and other issues.

• Class advisor
Every student belongs to a class or seminar. The class advisor of each class provides support related to courses, student life, career options, relationships with friends, and other issues.

• Japanese-language studies
Japanese-language classes for international students cover a wide range of material, from basic lessons in writing Japanese, reading newspaper articles, practicing pronunciation, to report writing and business Japanese. In Japanese-language skills classes, Japanese tutors support international students to help everyone improve their abilities.

■Tuition Assistance and Scholarship

• Tuition reduction for privately-financed international students up to 30 percent of the annual tuition can be waived.

• Scholarships
There is a scholarship of 20,000 or 30,000 yen per month for those who meet the certain standard of grades and attendance and who study with a "student(study-abroad)"visa status.

There are also several other independent scholarships available such as the Japan Student Services Organization Honors Scholarship, the Hitomi Memorial Scholarship and the Honor Students Scholarship.

About 60 percent of all international students are currently receiving some kind of scholarship.

■Auditor System

There is a system for auditing students with credit, for those wishing to enroll in faculties and graduate schools at Showa Women’s University. There are half-year and full-year terms.
If you require preparation time before taking the entrance exam, please take advantage of this system.
