In Iwate Prefecture, select international students are designated as "Iwate Exchange Student Ambassadors" who take part in various efforts to strengthen ties between Iwate and other countries. These Exchange Student Ambassadors are made up of students attending Iwate's universities, most notably Iwate University. The Ambassadors can be seen taking part in many activities, such as being guest lecturers on topics that promote multi-cultural understanding. Students that come to study in Iwate are often surprised by the local dish called "wanko soba". In this Iwate tradition, guests are welcomed with a bowl of soba noodles that are refilled constantly as they eat. This is just one of many experiences to be treasured for students that come to study in Iwate.
