The Faculty of Clothing

The founder of Sugino Fashion College, Yoshiko Sugino, travelled to America during Japan’s transition to contemporary Japan, learning about western fashion, fashion culture and the garment and design industry. Upon her return to Japan she became an educator and promoter of dressmaking and fashion. Her aim was to promote the wearing of western clothing and for women to become more independent through learning about clothing design and dressmaking techniques. She devised an original dressmaking form to adapt western-style clothing to fit Japanese bodies, and worked on establishing fashion and clothing education and creating a fashion style.
The founding philosophy of education at Sugino Fashion College, which was passed down from Yoshiko Sugino, is to nurture independence, creativity and the spirit to challenge oneself. Sugino Fashion College strives to produce human resources capable of holding their own in the world of fashion and clothing, equipped with a strong sense of creativity, cultural literacy, practical skills and the spirit of challenge necessary to carve roads into the Japanese fashion industry.

International Students

Sugino Fashion College is enthusiastic about programs that welcome international students to our campus. We have a collaborative agreement with the Zhejiang Fashion Institute of Technology that gives students who have completed a basic education program in China the opportunity to come to Japan to study in their second or third year. Currently on campus we have international students from China, Korea, Taiwan, Myanmar and Indonesia. The international students association organizes exchange events and students can learn more about Japan by taking a course in ‘Japanese Culture & Information’.

In addition, the College also runs ‘Japanese Fashion and Culture’ programs during the summer vacations. These intensive 10-day programs are for students from schools in China with which we have collaborative agreements.

Studying in the Department of Fashion

Students in this Department will learn the fundamentals of clothing design through the practical design and creation of garments. In addition, all students are required to take business courses to learn the basics of business and management in fashion. Students choose one of the 6 courses to specialize in according to their individual goals. These are Mode Creation, Industrial Pattern, Textile Design, Fashion Product Design, Business Management and Business Circulating Innovation. Through their studies, students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to find employment in either the business or creation side of the fashion industry.

What students learn in the Mode Creation Course

This Course offers a broad curriculum, from planning, design, patterns and manufacturing through to presentation. It strives to produce fashion creators in specialist jobs such as designer, pattern maker, merchandiser, stylist etc., capable of delivering their fashion message to the world.

Industrial Pattern Course, Department of Fashion
What students learn in the Industrial Pattern Course

Students will use computer graphics to check patterns and the customization of clothes for a better fit. In order to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for the ready-to-wear apparel industry, students will learn theory and practical skills in CAD pattern making, industrial patterns, somatotype application, sizing and grading.

What students learn in the Textile Design Course

It is said that the fashion industry is currently in a ‘textile period’. In this course students learn about textiles, the foundation of garment sculpting and design. It aims to nurture talented individuals capable of submitting creative textile designs, producing artistic works and creating materials suitable for apparel construction.

Fashion sculpting is strongly connected to art, architecture and design. The curriculum for this course is based on the key phrase ‘Wearable Products’. It aims to produce talented individuals capable of creating avant-garde ideas and practical designs for the real world.

Fashion Business Management Course, Department of Fashion
What students learn in the Fashion Business Management Course

Students will form teams and make a virtual company, through which they will create a business model for the real world, carrying out branding, design, planning, presentation, exhibition and sales. This course aims to cultivate fashion producers and merchandisers with a professional level of knowledge and practical skills.

This course aims to nurture talented individuals who will challenge the drastically changing fashion business with a flexible mindset that isn’t bound by traditional ideals, and who can propose up-to-date sales and circulation methods using ideas such as virtual dressing rooms and apps.

Department of Clothing Expression
What students learn in the Department of Clothing Expression

This Department was opened in April 2014 to offer students the opportunity to research and study the field of expression in the fashion industry. Students specialize in the fields of Apparel Expression, Styling, Visual Merchandising, Show Produce and Visual Media Expression. The course aims to produce talented individuals capable of finding employment in jobs related to fashion expression, which plays an important role in bridging products with the consumer.
