The Graduate School of Environmental and Life Sciences seeks to break new ground in research by building academic systems to address environmental and food supply problems as national and worldwide issues. The Graduate School of Environmental Science's education programs nurtured leaders who can help shape a recycling-based society that ensures safety and security for living and for the environment in urban and rural settings. This school advances that curriculum by adding a focus on food production that includes environmental protection and waste disposal management in addition to the pressing need to secure food safety for the sustainable development of humanity. This school endeavors to meet the needs of society by cultivating researchers with advanced, specialized knowledge through an interdisciplinary and international perspective that blends environmental and food supply studies.
In this division, students will identify the environmental effects from socio-economic activities and from the development that supports those activities, in both urban and rural centers of human activity. They will study and research ways to create social platforms and spaces where a sustainable society can co-exist in harmony with the environment, as well as the planning and technology needed to sustainably use and manage the recycling of indispensable food production resources such as air, water, earth, and animals.
In this division, students will examine recycling-based societies from a biological perspective. Interdisciplinary study and research is carried out in areas of agriculture, statistics, and medicine regarding the science behind food supplies, the environment and human health, and building a safe and secure society. The goal of these activities is to learn how to protect and grow the biodiversity of the ecosystems that make up the natural environments that humans are a part of.
In this division, study and research is carried out on the advancement of the recycling of the substances and resources, the appropriate management of waste, establishing management strategies for developing safer and more optimal permanent waste disposal methods, developing effective re-use and conversion technologies for material energy to avoid the depletion of resources, the development of green chemistry technologies, and developing environmental pollutant emission control technology. The goal of these activities is to address the most pressing needs of the modern world by building sustainable societies that have a reduced environmental impact and which minimizes the depletion of resources.
In this division, specialized micro-science research is carried out on the cells, genes, and chemical compounds of food to understand the phenomena of food at the material level and plant resources when placed under environmental stresses. In addition, leading-edge education and research is also carried out in related fields. These studies provide opportunities to study and research food in terms of environmental sustainability, which is essential to the sustainable development of humanity.
In this division, research focuses on the effective use of the animals (livestock) and plants (crops) required by society in the 21st century. Macro-level science concerning organisms and micro-level science concerning cells, genes, and chemical compounds are integrated in the leading-edge study and research of food production.
The basic goal of the Division of Environmental Science is to provide education and research towards the systematization of environmental studies to contribute to the realization of a sustainable, safe, and secure society. This is achieved by restructuring the academic concepts of existing environmental studies in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and medicine into an integrated whole through which the various environmental problems facing cities and communities around the world can be addressed. Specifically, students will take advanced, specialized courses in topics that share the academic philosophy of "building a recycling-based society" such as "Social Infrastructure and the Environment", "Life and the Environment", and "Resource Circulation" to consider issues in environmental fields from a high-level perspective. In addition, by combining the Doctor's Courses for the Division of Social Engineering and Environmental Management, the Division of Human Ecology, and the Division of Sustainability of Resources into one course in the Division of Environmental Science, a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary comprehensive curriculum is established.
In this division, plants (crops) and animals (livestock) are examined as food sources for humans, with research focusing on their efficient usage to meet the needs of the 21st century. Macro-level science concerning organisms and micro-level science concerning cells, genes, and chemical compounds are integrated in the leading-edge study and research of food production at all levels of scale. This study and research is carried out with a global perspective that addresses the current worldwide demand for environmentally-friendly, sustainable food production.
