Problems and issues in our society and the world have become increasingly complex, and designing solutions for them requires a broad integrated knowledge across various fields. The GIGA Program trains students to identify and resolve these complex issues by offering an education that integrates technology, science, design, and governance. The GIGA Program, taught in English, prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary for this era of rapid progress, thus positioning them for preeminent careers in global enterprises.
The program requires at least 124 credits and is designed to be completed in four years, although exceptional students may take advantage of the early graduation system. Rigorous courses in technology, engineering, mathematics, and the sciences will be reinforced by fundamental courses in international relations, development, political science, and language. The Faculty of Policy Management nurtures students in “the humanities integrated with the sciences” who have a focus on the field of Policy Design, International Strategy, Social Innovation, Business and Administration, or Urban and Regional Strategy. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies nurtures students in “the sciences integrated with humanities” who have a focus on the field of Novel Computing and Communication Systems, Design Engineering and Media Art, Advanced Biosciences, Environmental Design, or Human Environment. All students are also required to complete a Graduation Project or written thesis during their final two semesters.
In order to train students for productive careers in global enterprises, and prepare them for postgraduate studies at academic institutions around the world, the GlGA Program features two distinct requirements. First, core lectures are held solely in English, requiring students to possess a high proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing the language. Second, students are expected to participate in research projects from an early stage, typically during their second year.
GIGA Program students come from diverse backgrounds in culture, language, nationality, ethnicity, religion and educational system. World-Class Training in ICT and Governance
The Faculty of Policy Management trains students to identify and resolve social problems. These "problem-solving professionals" can then become the leader of the society. The world today faces many problems such as environmental pollution, energy crisis, economic gap between rich and poor, regional wars, ethnic conflicts and religious tension. None of these problems can be understood or resolved through a single field of study. A more comprehensive approach is needed to resolve these problems. The Faculty of Policy Management creates the right environment for students to experience the way policies are made, through the process of demonstration, experiment and evaluation of results. By experiencing these processes and employing new information networks students can find an integrative approach to problem solving. The Faculty also encourages students to conduct fieldwork and participate in internship programs to acquire practical experience.
The twenty-first century is characterized by a special emphasis on "Environment and Information" which must be integrated in higher education to resolve contemporary problems. The Faculty of Environment and Information Studies introduces students to the methodologies of new sciences, technology and design, and teaches them how to apply their newly-acquired knowledge to help them to understand about planet earth, human beings, society, nature and life, and find solutions to problems.
The Faculty of Environment and Information Studies seeks (1) mathematics and science majors who can learn and apply methods of advanced technologies to society, (2) arts majors who can use such technologies for social improvement, and (3) mathematics and science or arts major who can exclusively study the subject as undergraduates.
Research at SFC is inter-disciplinary and not bound by any rigid academic structure. Approximately one hundred research activities in various research areas are conducted in the Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies.
