Niseko is a resort town in Hokkaido that is popular with international travelers. There are many foreign-owned companies investing and running businesses in Niseko, and it is quite natural to see shop menus in other languages around town.

Hokkaido Bunkyo University offers a wide selection of short-term, mid-term and long-term study abroad programs.
In particular, students can study abroad in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, China, Korea, Taiwan or Russia for their compulsory “short-term language training” in second year.
Students in the Department of International Liberal Arts will be trained in a diverse cross-disciplinary international education in the humanities and social sciences, gaining the important skills needed to become capable of playing an active role globally. Our students will be able to coexist and collaborate with the ability to communicate in multiple foreign languages and an analytical methodology focusing on world politics and economics. Through the study of world cultures, societies, and history, students will develop sufficient communication skills, a sense of humanity, and sociability, all of which are needed to play an active role globally.
Throughout our curriculum, students will undertake in-depth study into international relations and development assistance as well as environmental issues and SDG’s. In addition to understanding the cultures and history around the world and studying the political and social issues of the countries with close relations to Japan, we will foster in our students the ability to analyze from the perspective of the international political economy and global society. This knowledge will come together to help our students gain the ability to understand diversity and the context for different values around the world.

At the Department of International Communication, we are training our students to be able to show hospitality to people who come from all over the world to visit Hokkaido. As we spread the word about Hokkaido to the world, our graduates will be able to contribute to the development of the regional society with a good command of English and Chinese languages as a base, and with empathy, a great understanding of other cultures, and the communication ability to bring people together.
The Language Professional Subjects provide an example of how our students will be trained to become “Communicators” in English and Chinese, as they thoroughly study these two languages.
We aim for multilingualism as students study other languages such as Korean, French and Russian.
