Kusatsu City and Ryukoku University Joint Lecture Series 2021 – ‘The Culture of Aobana-Dyed Paper’
In order for people to be able to take courses safely during the corona pandemic, Ryukoku University will again be offering public online courses this year.
Part one of the Kusastsu City and Ryukoku Joint Lecture Series 2021 is a lecture on ‘The Culture of Aobana-Dyed Paper’. Aobana is a dye colorant extracted from blue flowers. What kinds of plant materials are used in the traditional Japanese crafts of textile and paper dying?
This course will look into the aobana blue and white paper that is dyed using a dried blue pigment from aobana flower petals. It will explore the cultivation and processing of aobana flowers by farmers in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture, and the role of aobana in the world of Kimonos and Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. It will also discuss the history of aobana production and distribution while also considering its cultural value and how it can continue to be used sustainably in the future.

The webinar will be available for viewing for approximately two weeks.
