The Faculty of Policy Studies uses problem-based approaches to equip its students with both applied knowledge to deal with our increasingly diverse and complex society, and the capacity to appreciate a diversity of value outlooks founded on solid historical awareness. As well as actively incorporating insights from the social sciences, the Faculty seeks to uncover new challenges associated with global structural shifts and identify ways to address those challenges, informed by civilization theory and integrating existing social science methodologies. The Faculty embraces the ideal of a multicultural campus. It sets its sights not only on the developed world of Europe and North America, but also on the countries and regions of Asia, through both the Nanzan Asia Program and the pro-active intake of international students mainly from Asia (around 30 international students at each year level). The curriculum provided to international students enables graduation in the standard four years, including Japanese language education. International students are also welcomed in Nanzan’s other faculties.
All problem-solving requires a capacity to formulate solutions founded on multi-faceted understanding of the problem. The Department of Policy Studies cultivates such capacity by bringing together faculty members from a variety of disciplines including law, humanities, economics, science, pharmacy, and agriculture, each providing instruction grounded in their own fields of expertise.
In their first year in the Department, students take courses on civilization and religion as the basis of policy-making, as well as developing their communicative proficiency in English, computer literacy, and general intellectual skills through foundation seminar classes. Students then proceed to take courses in the fundamentals of policy studies, public policy, international policy, and environmental policy. In their third and fourth years, they take seminar-style policy studies project classes, pursuing research on practical policy issues of their own choice.
