Borderless learning spanning studies in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences

Nihon University’s College of Humanities and Sciences is the only comprehensive college in Japan founded on the principle of integrating humanities and sciences. There are a total of 18 departments, with 6 in humanities, 6 in social sciences, and 6 in natural sciences. While they each provide focused studies in their respective fields, the structure of the college allows for borderless learning that crosses over between the humanities and sciences. The unique curriculum organically integrates the acquisition of basic knowledge and qualifications so that the specialized knowledge students obtain can be applied in the real world. In this way, students become both generalists and specialists.

Department of Philosophy
What is the concept of “self”? What does it mean to be human? What is “happiness”? Striving to find the answers to such questions can hone your thinking skills and improve your life.

The roots of philosophy lie in “loving knowledge”. By exploring the various aspects of existence and life in our world including personal improvement, aesthetic appreciation, and religious beliefs, students will discover new things about themselves and the world around them. Therein lies the enjoyment of studying philosophy. The curriculum of the Department of Philosophy in the College of Humanities and Sciences covers these 4 categories of study: philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, and religious studies. Students will be able to study areas which they have the most interest in depth while acquiring a broad range of knowledge in the field.

Department of History
The study of history links our past with our future. In the Department of History, students focus on history’s connections to our present day as well as to our future.

You may ask, why do we research events that happened in the past? History is by no means just a series of past events. Every page of ancient writing, once understood in a modern context, brings greater understanding of modern day civilizations. The study of history is crucial for building our understanding of modern society and what the future may hold. The study of history undoubtedly brings us a greater-reaching and multifaceted understanding of the world’s societies and their activities.

Department of Japanese Language and Literature
Gain a greater understanding of Japan’s society through its words, script, and writings while further cultivating your own language skills.

Throughout our everyday lives, our use of language reflects our personal identities and our roles in society. In the global information age of the 21st century, language skills are in higher demand than ever before. In the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, the study of Japanese as a way of thinking is combined with the study of Japanese literature as a source of knowledge. In this way, students will hone their insight and expressive capabilities. Students can satiate their curiosity in the Japanese language through far-reaching studies in the 3 fields of Japanese literature, Japanese linguistics, and calligraphic studies.

Department of Chinese Language and Literature
One in every five people in the world speak Chinese. Students will learn the Chinese language as well as the history and culture of the rapidly-developing country to build skills for living in the modern Asian era.

In Japan, Chinese is commonly regarded as a language one starts learning in university, and as such, there are almost no opportunities to study Chinese in high school or earlier. This department’s greatest feature is its intensive cultivation of Chinese language skills. Those who study hard and complete the department’s program will be able to acquire fully-realized Chinese communication skills. No prior Chinese study is required. The foundation of Chinese language skills provided in this department support specialized learning in a wide range of Chinese studies, from classic literature to topics of modern popular culture.

At the same time, students will also develop the communication skills required to live and work in our era of globalization. Furthermore, students will deepen their recognition and understanding of other cultures while fostering their own cultural identity to better excel in international society.

Department of German Literature
In our globalizing world, the study of Germanic languages is important as a primary component of understanding multilingual and multicultural Europe.

The Germanic languages spoken in countries such as Germany, Austria, and Switzerland developed over the complex interconnected history of one of Europe’s dominant cultural spheres. Drawing from these longstanding traditions, the Department of German Literature offers studies in the writings, language, and cultures of the Germanic world. After deepening their understanding of Europe, students will cultivate practical, real-world German language skills through language lessons by native German speakers and overseas study programs (as elective courses).

However, in our modern society, these relationships are growing more diverse and complex, and as a result a variety of issues are arising. The Department of Sociology was established in 1920 as Japan’s first department of sociology at a private university. Through the curriculum which has been developed over the years since, students are provided with the flexible intelligence and sensibilities required to closely examine our complex modern society, as well as the imagination and planning skills needed to forge new paths into the future.

In the Department of Geography, students are trained to acquire the skills to provide such solutions through a curriculum that includes lectures, lab work, and field studies. Students learn practical methods to identify issues on their own, collect information, create maps, perform on-site research, and then analyze and examine the results.

Department of Geosystem Sciences
The Earth is a blue oasis floating through the emptiness of space. By applying the latest technologies, we can better understand our dynamic, ever-changing planet.

The people of our planet are currently facing problems caused by environmental changes and natural disasters, creating an urgent need to better understand the causes and mechanisms of such phenomena. The Department of Geosystem Sciences examines the Earth from a modern perspective, covering topics such as geological phenomena and composition, continental structure and activity, water circulation, meteorological activity, and environmental shifts. Students will become able to gain insights into the future of our planet so that they can contribute to society. Wouldn’t you like to gather information outdoors in field work and then perform advanced data analysis at the laboratory to unravel the mysteries of our planet?
