Producing Numerous Graduates Responsible for the Future of Science and Technology

The Faculty of Science Division 1 strictly enforces the fundamentals of science research and education, based on the philosophies of a performance-based system incorporated from the former Tokyo College of Science and the movement to promote science inherited from the Tokyo Academy of Physics, the forerunner of the Tokyo University of Science which was founded in 1881. Science is the study to identify the various substances and phenomena that exist in our natural environment, to discover the various laws that control them, and research scientific truths. Nowadays, science is applied in various fields, such as engineering, information science, pharmaceutical sciences, life sciences and even social sciences. In addition to teaching the fundamentals of science, the Faculty of Science Division 1 provides a well-balanced curriculum in applied science. The connection between fundamental and applied science is widespread in both education and research. The Faculty aims to produce talented human resources who are moral and full of human character, and who have a solid understanding in basic science, as well as specialized scholastic abilities.

Department of Mathematics

We often hear that the mathematics taught at university differs from that taught during high school. People have different images of what ‘mathematics’ is and it is therefore only natural that the image of university and high school mathematics also differs. Firstly, let’s think about what the essence of mathematics really is. In the study of mathematics we need to explore theories in our mind, unlike with chemistry and physics, which both use experiments as an end means to prove or disprove a theory. Mathematicians must also have the communication skills to correctly convey and discuss their ideas with others. The Department of Mathematics offers a great study and learning environment for students who not only like the adding and subtracting side of mathematics, but who also like reasoning and logical thinking.

Department of Physics

Physics is an academic field that pursues the essence of nature, in all its forms, including earth, space, living organisms, condensed matter, molecules, nuclei, elemental particles etc. In addition to taking courses on the fundamentals of physics, students in this Department can choose subjects from a large range of options in fields that are currently being developed. You are free to choose whichever subjects you like, in line with your own individual goals and interests. In your 4th year you will work on a graduation research project of your own choosing, cementing the knowledge you have attained thus far, while also looking ahead into career options after graduation. The Department of Physics puts a lot of emphasis on practical exercises and experiments from the very first year. Teacher-student discussions are used to ensure students have an accurate, clear and thorough understanding of physics.

Department of Chemistry

In addition to specialized subdivisions, current trends show chemistry as an academic field becoming more internationalized and interdisciplinary. We have reached an era that demands a wide range of fundamental academic knowledge, as well as the ability to research the peripheral areas of the discipline, and it is one of the traditional goals of this Department to nurture graduates who can become fundamental researchers and educators. The Department of Chemistry therefore offers a curriculum that not only ensures students are adequately equipped with fundamental chemistry knowledge, but are also knowledgeable in the basics of peripheral areas. During the first-half of the specialized course students spend just as much time in lectures as they do conducting experiments on each topic, working hard to discover the ability to respond to new situations. In the second half of the course, students choose from a large range of more specialist courses, honing their area of aptitude and cultivating academic ability that can be immediately applied in society.

Department of Applied Mathematics

Many students choose the Department of Applied Mathematics because it offers a system for students to continue on to graduate school. The features of the Department of Applied Mathematics are:
Specialized education that focuses on the three academic fields of “statistical sciences,” “computational mathematics” and “information mathematics.”
Practical education into the theory and application of these three fields, as well as cutting-edge computer education.
A curriculum directly linked to the Department of Applied Mathematics major in the graduate school.
Support for students wanting to acquire practical credentials such as actuaries and information processing engineer qualifications.
A curriculum for students wanting to become teachers or instructors (mathematics / information science licenses)

Department of Applied Physics

Students in the Department of Applied Physics begin their studies by acquiring a strong knowledge base in the fundamental areas of mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics etc., all of which are essential in applying physics in the real world. Students then carryout detailed study into specialist fields such as condensed matter, energy conversion science and neurophysiology. Students will also hone their practical skills through taking computer related courses and conducting practical exercises and experiments. The Department of Applied Physics offers cutting-edge research and education with three laboratories working together in quantum physics, mathematical and statistical physics and advanced device systems.

Department of Applied Chemistry

The goal of the Department of Applied Chemistry is to nurture talented researchers and engineers capable of conducting their own research in response to current needs. In addition to chemistry’s increasingly close relationship to neighboring science fields, it is also deeply related to an array of industrial fields in society. Upcoming chemists and engineers will need not only a wide range of scientific knowledge, but also a broad perspective on how to apply their knowledge and skills in society, and it is our endeavor to produce such talented individuals. Our curriculum was formed to ensure we reach this goal.
