Mekai University’s Special Japanese Language Course is aimed at international students planning on studying at a Japanese university at either undergraduate or graduate level. It equips students with the Japanese-language education necessary to take lectures at university level. By deepening their understanding of Japanese culture and society, this course will help students make a smooth transition to life in Japan and communicating in Japanese.
This program offers students three main areas of study – Japanese Language, Liberal Arts and General Education courses.
Systematic Japanese-language education is provided based on each student’s individual level of Japanese. The curriculum aims to help students perform well on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)*, which measures the skills that are needed for admission to a university. Students will strengthen their written expression and essay writing skills in line with their level of Japanese language ability. Students in the top class will practice writing longer compositions in order to acquire the skills necessary to write reports at university level.
EJU: This exam is held twice a year, in June and November. It has become a screening standard for international students wanting admission into a national or private university in Japan (not required by all universities). It evaluates Japanese language skills as well as basic academic knowledge. In the Japanese language section students are tested on writing, reading comprehension, listening and listening-reading comprehension.
Arts:Japanese, General Academic Skills (Japan and the world), Mathematics
Sciences: Japanese, Science (students must choose 2 from Physics, Chemistry and Biology), Mathematics

An English course is also provided to prepare students wanting to take entrance exams for universities that include English in their examinations.
