Students refine themselves to “Be a Light to the World.”

Showa Women's University (SWU) founded in 1920 is located in Tokyo, Japan, minutes away from the bustling downtown Shibuya. Since the founding, its mission has been to educate women to become self-reliant and to take a significant role in society under the motto “Be a Light to the World.” A wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses and programs are offered to over 5,400 students, including those from other countries.
Undergraduate majors offered are Japanese Language and Literature, English Communication, History and Culture, International Studies, Psychology, Social Welfare, Contemporary Liberal Arts, Elementary Education, Human Environmental Science and Design, Human Health and Design, Food Science and Nutrition and Business Design.

"Intensive Japanese Language Program"

SWU has launched 1-semester "Intensive Japanese Language Program" for international students since 2014.
This program is designed for female university undergraduate or graduate students studying outside Japan, and will allow students with beginner level Japanese to improve their Japanese and experience an exciting student life in Tokyo!
There is also an option of experiencing an internship at Japanese firms, service facilities or other organizations after the program.

"International Student Support Scholarship"

SWU offers a scholarship for degree-seeking international students.
Those who meet the certain standard of grades and attendance shall receive 20,000 or 30,000 yen scholarship per month. Together with the tuition exemption for international students, students are possible to study for half the normal tuition.

A campus where you can make lifelong friends and meet role models for the future

At SWU, many kinds of people come together in pursuit of their respective dreams. On campus, women of all ages mingle, gather, and learn from each other; it is a place where you will make lifelong friends and discover who you want to become in the future.
Offering 12 departments relating to humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and a wide range of liberal arts courses, SWU is a medium-sized university with around 5,000 enrolled students.
With a history of more than 90 years, it cultivates independent, socially active, global-minded women who are able to make a contribution to the future

"Faculty of International Studies"

SWU will establish the Faculty of International Studies in academic year 2017. The Faculty consists of the Department of English Communication and the Department of International Studies, of which they are separated from the Faculty of Humanities and Culture and reorganized to the Faculty of International Studies.

"HIrao Scholarship Program"

The Hirao Scholarship Program has been established through a donation from Mr. Koji Hirao, a current faculty member of SWU who served as its fourth Chancellor. The program aims to provide financial assistance to ternational students from the Southeast Asia region who wish to study at SWU.

Department of Japanese Language and Literature

There are three fields to choose from: Japanese Literature, Japanese Language, and Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language. Students in Japanese Literature study classical and modern Japanese literary works along with children’s literature. Students focusing on Japanese Language study the structure and the history of the language. Students from the Teaching Japanese as Foreign Language course study how to teach Japanese to foreigners.

Department of History and Culture

Students study the history and culture of Japan and the world. They explore four basic fields of study: History and Archeology, Art and Traditional Culture, The Culture of Region and Race, and Cultural Assets and Museology. They also learn about three academic methodologies: practice, field work, and philological methods.

Department of English Language Communication (will be reorganized to the faculty of International Studies next academic year)

Students develop their practical English abilities to a high level so that they can work in international society. Sophomore students spend from 5 to 17 months at Showa Boston. After returning from Boston, they continue to enhance their practical English skills and concentrate on academic categories, including English and American Literature and Culture, English Linguistics, Teaching English to Children, Media Communication and Business Communication.

Department of International Studies (will be reorganized to the faculty of International Studies next academic year)

The department provides students with a wide variety of perspectives to grasp global issues and attain fluency in two foreign languages (English + French, Spanish, German, Chinese or Korean). They spend a semester at Showa Boston or affiliated schools in Shanghai or Seoul. The aim of the department is to prepare graduates who can play an active role worldwide with their practical knowledge and skills.
