Course in Environmental Information Studies

The Course in Environmental Information Studies consists of a master's program and a doctoral program.

In the master's program, students carry out research and study in 4 areas: Environmental Management, Communication Environment, Information Systems, and Regional/Urban Environment. These 4 areas are described below.

Environmental Management: This field offers study and research opportunities on topics including environmental policy from an international perspective, modes of production and consumption that take into account nature and regional environmental conservation, environmental management for businesses, and the optimization of corporate management.
Communication Environment: This field offers study and research opportunities for methods of improving communication in modern society though mass media and computers. Topics are covered from perspectives of social science including sociology, cultural anthropology, and cognitive science.
Information Systems: This field offers study and research opportunities from perspectives of social science and engineering as related to fundamental information and communication technologies, notably user interfaces, which have significantly contributed to the development of modern society.
Regional/Urban Environment: This field offers study and research opportunities from perspectives of biology, architectural environment studies, environmental design, and urban engineering, focusing on the conservation and restoration of ecosystems, including those of humans, in buildings, cities, and surrounding regional environments.

The doctoral program is divided into two areas, "Environment" and "Information". Students will carry out advanced, interdisciplinary, in-depth research in these fields as they train to become researchers, academics, and leaders who can excel as experts in environmental and information-based fields.

Course in Urban Life Studies

The Course in Urban Life Studies is only available as a master's program, and course focuses solely on the field of urban life studies.
Field of Urban Life Studies
This field offers study and research opportunities from perspectives of social science, focusing on new work styles and lifestyles in ever-changing urban living environments against the background of progressing urbanization, aging populations, environmental issues, and computerization.
This course, which develops themes in urban life studies at Tokyo City University as part of the Faculty of Urban Life Studies, is offered as a social sciences graduate program covering themes not found in any other university or faculty curriculum. Students will carry out expansive study and research within the inter-compatible, interdisciplinary frameworks of the Graduate School of Environmental and Information Studies.
The Faculty of Urban Life Studies is an interdisciplinary program with a new perspective towards realizing the creation of new work styles and lifestyles in ever-changing urban living environments against the background of progressing urbanization, aging populations, environmental issues, and computerization. Topics of study and research include (1) urban culture as a source of attraction, (2) cities which will serve as the stages for such culture, (3) residences which will serve as living spaces for the people within those cultures, and (4) infrastructure that supports urban life. Over the course of the program, students shall pursue engineering and artistic methodologies (in terms of both technology and design), which are in turn based on social (residential and market) methodologies branching out of studies in commerce and business that take urban lifestyles into consideration.
These topics are studied and research at advanced levels in the Urban Life Studies course of the Graduate School of Environmental and Information Studies, so classes and research guidance are usually held at the Todoroki campus. The course is composed of the Introduction, followed by topics in Urban Administration and Economy, Urban Management, and Urban Design. The course will provide comprehensive study and academic research opportunities for envisioning and planning new spaces, products and services that support citizens' needs (design topics), the development and realization of such projects (development topics), and the project promotion and management necessary to sustainable operate such initiatives (management topics). This course strives to develop human resources with the capacity to plan and execute project promotion and management operations while working with experts in their respective fields towards realizing visions and plans that respond to citizens' needs.
