Chemistry-Biology Combined Major Program (CBCMP)

1. Program Overview
The Program offers students a new opportunity to learn two fundamental and interacting fields, while preparing them for the challenges of the rapidly advancing scientific frontier.

The aim of this program is to impart fundamental knowledge and research skills for interdisciplinary research in chemistry and biology, and to expose students to a multicultural environment for intercultural understanding and communication.

This program provides classes taught in English in the liberal arts, basic sciences, and basic mathematics, as well as in-depth chemistry and biology classes such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular genetics, and more.

This program also offers an intensive Japanese Language Program for foreign students. Specifically, several Japanese language courses are provided for foreign students relative to the level of their Japanese proficiency.

Special features of this program are the small classes and seminars, enabling the highest educational opportunities while providing substantial practice and world-class top-level experiments using modern apparatuses and equipment.

Most of the students in this program will be expected to enter a graduate course at the Graduate School of Science, the Graduate School of Engineering, or the Graduate School of Engineering Science of Osaka University.

These graduate courses will take advantage of the rich array of scientific accomplishments and experiences acquired through the graduate courses taught in English, as well as through world-class cutting-edge research activities.

2. Admission Policy
We seek to recruit students who are concerned with this combined academic area.

3. Sample Subjects
•Biochemistry
•Bioinformatics
•Cell Biology
•Organic Chemistry
•Physical Chemistry
•Inorganic & Analytical Chemistry
•Molecular Genetics
•Combined Major Honors Seminar

4. Graduation Requirements
The students are expected to earn at least 135 credits, including common core subjects, specialized subjects, field work, independent study project, and graduation thesis.

5. Career Opportunities
This program equips students to work in Japanese and/or international companies, universities, and research institutes.

Human Sciences International Undergraduate Degree Program

1. Program Overview
The Program aims to cultivate self-motivated, reflective students who have a sophisticated knowledge base and the necessary practical skills to meet the challenges that they will face in our fast-changing, globalized world. At the same time, it aims to nurture students who have a well-defined area of expertise and who are able to bring workable solutions to a variety of problems and issues in their field.

This exciting and innovative program is being offered from October in the 2011-2012 school year by the School and Graduate School of Human Sciences in collaboration with other schools, graduate schools, and research centers at Osaka University. In addition to providing an English language-based program that develops critical thinking and human science research skills (both qualitative and quantitative), it is also expected that students will develop a high-level proficiency in Japanese.

From the fourth semester, students will major in either Global Citizenship or Contemporary Japan. The Global Citizenship Major is intended to provide a learning environment in which students acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude for reflecting critically on and engaging positively with global issues. The Contemporary Japan Major aims to provide students with a Japanese studies curriculum that encourages the development of informed, critical and multicultural perspectives on Japan, Japanese culture and its international relations in the world. Japanese language study will be compulsory in the freshman and sophomore years for both majors and optional thereafter.

These two majors are not separate, but will be effectively integrated in order to nurture ‘GLocal actors’ who can think and act both locally and globally.

2. Admission Policy
We seek to recruit students who are concerned with contemporary issues in the world at various levels, from local to global, and who are committed to building communities and societies where people can live in peace and harmony. Further details about specific academic and language proficiency admission requirements will be publicized in due course.

3. Sample Subjects
•Academic writing
•Critical thinking
•Research and computer skills
•Media and communication
•Global cooperation
•Multicultural understanding
•Modern Japanese philosophy and thought
•Gender and Education
•Global Poverty and Development

4. Graduation Requirements
The students are expected to earn at least 124 credits, including common core subjects, specialized subjects, field work, independent study project, and graduation thesis.

5. Career Opportunities
This program equips students to work in Japanese/global companies or international organizations and NGOs, or to pursue advanced academic degrees.
