The Musashino area has a deep connection with literature. Through learning Japanese literature, culture, and language here, students will develop a rich sensitivity and sound awareness of issues, as well as developing their reading comprehension, the ability to express themselves, creativity and critical thinking skills.
Through this type of learning we will nurture their comprehensive communication skills, with an aim to cultivate personnel who can understand the world through language and utilize language to create new worlds.
■ Students will benefit from receiving guidance direct from professionals active at the forefront of their fields.
Our teaching staff deliver detailed guidance, with faculty members coming from varied backgrounds including novelists, poets, haiku poets, children’s authors, critics, calligraphers, Noh actors, videographers, editors, as well as researchers of Japanese literature, linguistics, history and culture. Students will discover the beauty of Japanese culture and language together with our teachers.
■ Extensive material and literature for you to truly explore Japanese culture.
Our university is home to a wide range of facilities including the Noh Research Archives, the Musashino Literature Museum, and the Japanese Literature Research Center. We hold open lectures and performances for Noh theater and Kyogen plays, and have a large selection of material and books for researching Japanese literature. At Musashino University, students can experience Japanese culture close-up.
Classroom snapshot
Teaching extends to practical Noh acting methods, which students can experience for themselves.
We have gathered a wide selection of material related to Noh theater and Kyogen plays at the Noh Research Archives.
Through exposure to many Japanese literary works and authors, from The Tale of Genji and The Pillow Book, to Soseki Natsume, Osamu Dazai, Yasunari Kawabata, and Haruki Murakami, students will gain enjoyment and the ability to decipher literary works from an independent point of view.
Being taught by a solid faculty of professional authors and prestigious Noh theater academics who are working on the front line in their fields, students can also take on the challenge of studying creative and artistic fields such as novels, haiku and tanka verses, calligraphy, picture books, children’s literature, and traditional performing arts.
Through their learning, students will read about the world through language and aim to become creators themselves.
■ Examples of future career prospects
Researchers, announcers, editors, reporters, and jobs related to publishing, advertising, theater, calligraphic art, museum career paths, mass communications, cultural program production, etc.
