With an emphasis on the foundations of human psychology, students firstly take courses on psychology methodology and use experiments and tests to help them understand the fundamentals of psychological mentality. In addition to these foundation subjects students can also take classes in anthropology and education. In order to have an overall and comprehensive understanding of humans and human nature from a broad perspective, students also study people, cultural anthropology, biology, religion and sociology.
The Faculty of Psychology offers three specialist courses, the ‘Clinical Psychology Course’, in which students use the study of developmental psychology and clinical psychology to understand and learn ways in which to support people suffering from various types of worries and psychological issues, the ‘Criminal Psychology Course’, in which students study crime related psychological issues, with a focus on the recently high-profile discipline of criminal psychology, and lastly the ‘Child Psychology Course’, in which students learn about the various developments related to child growth. Students start to deepen their specialist knowledge in their third year, after choosing the course which best suits their desired career path.
Because the field of psychology deals with understanding the minds and hearts of people, students aren’t actually researching or studying something tangible. Class discussions and practical exercises are carried out so that students can begin to understand what others are thinking and what kind of personalities they have. These exercises aim to cultivate strong communication skills that we hope can be utilized and developed to their full extent out in the working world!
Classes in the Faculty of Psychology are made up of practical study through group work and experiments.
Teacher-centered seminars aim at enhancing students’ curiosity into specialist fields.
Surugadai University has a psychological counseling center with counselors, some of whom have graduated from the Graduate School of Psychology and are working as clinical psychologists.
This course offers a curriculum aimed at students wanting to be accredited as Certified Public Psychologists, a national qualification becoming available in Japan from 2017. It aims to foster talented individuals who want to work in the field of helping others, and who are interested in psychotherapy, counseling, and dealing with the various childhood issues associated with bullying and juvenile delinquency. Through subjects such as ‘Developmental and Clinical Studies’, ‘Counseling’ and ‘Psychiatry’ students study the various issues related to development and the ways that these can be clinically treated. Students will also participate in practical ‘Clinical Psychology’ and ‘Clinical Psychology Assessment’ seminars to learn how to assess clients, and the types of attitudes, behavior and techniques essential for being a counselor.
This course specializes in criminal psychology, an academic field still relatively untaught in Japan. Students will study the multifaceted dimensions of criminal psychology by examining violent crimes and drug addiction etc., and assisting with experimental trials and rehabilitation. Students also study the psychology of people living in contemporary society, with a focus on recently high-profile disciplines such as forensic psychology and environmental psychology.
In this course students will deepen their understanding of the kind of support and education needed to be in tune with child development, with an emphasis on experiencing regional child-rearing support activities. This course aims to nurture individuals, specialists and family men and women capable of encouraging the good health and development of children. Students taking this course in conjunction with Clinical Psychology will also learn about various issues related to childhood bullying, truancy and delinquency.
