The next OIST Admissions Workshop will be held on February 14th-16th, 2017 (the actual PhD program starts from September 2017). Please refer to the information below and submit your application before the deadline.
2017 February Admissions Workshop:
- Application deadline for individuals who need visa to enter Japan: November 15th, 2016
- Application deadline for individuals who do not need visa to enter Japan: December 31st, 2016

Students in the PhD program are expected to engage full-time in advanced study and research. Financial support of 2.4 million yen per year (taxable) is provided for each year of approved full-time study, which is sufficient to ensure a comfortable standard of living. Course fees will also be covered. Students additionally receive support for relocation to Okinawa, a personal computer and financial support for educational travel and conference attendance.
Students may choose among architecturally designed single, double, or family housing options that include kitchen and living rooms. Housing is located a short walk from amenities and close to the laboratory buildings. The apartments are all brand new with stunning sea views only a 5-minute walk from a beautiful beach. Students are expected to live on campus for the first year of their program, and are welcome to stay longer.
OIST offers employees and students a full range of childcare for preschool and school-age children through the CDC. The OIST community is intrinsically international, but to accommodate children raised and educated here, the staff of the Preschool and other CDC programs includes Japanese and English speakers.
All students receive an internationally competitive financial support package.
The Village Center is a two-building, 5-story facility with common and community facilities on the ground floor and one- and two-bedroom apartments above. A new housing complex is anticipated to be opened in the summer of 2015.
OIST offers PhD students a full range of childcare for preschool and school-age children through the Child Development Center (CDC).
