Japan’s Premier Graduate School of Art and Design

The objective of the Graduate School of Musashino Art University is to build on the fundamentals taught in its undergraduate programs to contribute to the creation and development of culture through the education of scholars who have deeply pursued research into the techniques, theories and applications of art and design within their field of study.
The Master's Program offers studies in a broad range of topics for the cultivation of the advanced skills required for carrying out further research and for working in specialized fields. The Doctoral Program includes research into high-level techniques and theories of creation and expression to nurture a wide breadth of academic knowledge, the advanced skills necessary for independent creative and research activities, and the ability to lead others in research into art and design.

Fine Arts: Japanese Painting Course

The Master's Degree Program builds on the basic knowledge of Japanese painting (nihonga) acquired in the 4-year Undergraduate Program or comparable programs of other universities. The program provides a valuable period for students to gain greater self-awareness while accumulating a body of research. The curriculum calls for the completion each year of a painting measuring around 250 cm × 350 cm. However, this is merely a guideline; students themselves plan how to carry out their work.
Study of Japanese Painting I, II and III are intended as periods for experimental study, inspiring students with even greater enthusiasm for new forms of expression, and helping them fully understand the meaning of creative activity. Completion projects are the culmination of two years’ study, and are presented to MAU and the wider community through the degree show. In this program students aim to establish themselves as artists by forming a firm vision for the direction of their future creative endeavors.

Fine Arts: Painting Course

The graduate Painting Course pursues the skills and sensibilities learned in the four undergraduate years on a deeper, more professional level. Notably, students think in more detailed, specialized ways about the problems they encounter in their work with guidance from their supervising faculty members. Painting styles range from representational to abstract, and with more students pursuing modern art forms, the school's studios overflow with ambitious works. The Graduate School is a place where conversation and criticism revolve around the students' works. As students engage with their work and contemplate art and the world around them, the program becomes an important stepping-stone on the road to becoming an artist.

Fine Arts: Printmaking Course

Through a variety of expressive media, from traditional techniques to prints incorporating photographs and computer graphics, the Printmaking Course is designed to extend students' creative horizons, while ensuring due attention is paid to themes generated by their own ideas. Students also establish printmaking as a means of personal expression, which is manifested in the domain of painting with a contemporary fine art approach. The studios for woodblock, copperplate, lithograph and silkscreen printmaking have facilities for the production of large prints, and students in the master's degree program study print production by exploring the possibilities of printmaking as a form of expression, based on the fundamental principles of these different types of print. The objective is to provide practical training for the next generation of printmakers and researchers.

Fine Arts: Sculpture Course

The Sculpture Course consists of two years in which students acquire specialized skills with a view to future careers as sculptors and artists through the acquisition of information and the sharing of their self-expression with the world around them. Postgraduate studies are not simply an extension of the four years of undergraduate study, but are viewed as a process of contemplating the state of art amid shifting values, and establishing one's own professional specialty while engaging in research and occasionally mentoring undergraduate students.

Fine Arts: Science of Art and Design Course

Established for students whose research specialties are in academic fields such as art history, art theory, aesthetics, and design, this course aims to encourage the development of independent research. To deepen students' understanding of professionalism and design as whole, the curriculum centers on lectures, seminars, and language instruction. Lecture classes are geared to students who have taken undergraduate classes in art history and design theory or possess a comparable level of knowledge. Prospective students from other universities with degrees in literature or other fields should bear this requirement in mind.

Fine Arts: Arts Policy and Management Course

Arts and culture policy is now recognized as a vital policy issue for today's world, and the quest is on for more effective ways to connect human, economic and cultural resources to create new possibilities. This course looks at art and design from the viewpoint of "policy" and "culture", and investigates the potential systematization of ideas and information. Specifically, students learn about the ideals behind various activities and policies that link society and culture, and explore the development of new cultural activities in areas such as museums and corporate philanthropy. Students develop a greater understanding of management techniques that incorporate methods based on the comparative study of cultures and civilizations as well as knowledge drawn from art history, contemporary art theory, and art sociology. Through lectures and an emphasis on international and regional surveys and research projects, the course aims to contribute new ideas to the development of support systems for art and culture that are capable of creating and disseminating new values.

Design Program: Visual Communication Design Course

Human communication does not consist merely of transmitting messages. In a general sense, it encompasses actions that result from the use of mechanisms such as sound, sight, and gestures. This includes responses to changes that occur between people, and actions that bring about changes because of their effect on people and the environment. By nature, human communication is a dynamic process that involves complex systems of perception and action. The aim of the Visual Communication Design Course is to help students seek new designs and establish their own specialized fields through theoretical and practical research that perceives communication as a dynamic process. Students engage in theoretical studies in fields such as visual language, semiotics of design, and carry out research in areas that include writing space design, information design, environment design, and general communication design.

Design Program: Industrial, Interior and Craft Design Course

The Course covers the fields of Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Craft Design. Craft design is further subdivided by material into five distinct disciplines: metalwork, ceramics, woodwork, textiles and glass. Students select a research area from one of these fields, and plan and produce related projects considering the design possibilities of their work in a social context. Students continue to work under the supervision of faculty, focusing chiefly on their field of specialization. To create work that addresses a wide spectrum of living, students must develop a broad outlook and be able to explore problems from various angles. Consequently, the course is set up to enable students to receive instruction and advice from instructors in related fields as well as from their instructors.

Design Program: Scenography, Display and Fashion Design Course

The Scenography, Display and Fashion Design Course focuses on the research of specific themes based on fundamentals in the areas of overall stage art, environment design, interior design, and fashion design. The course aims to train specialists with unique sensibilities, abundant creativity, and advanced design skills by having students explore the relationships of people to the spaces around them as well as their cultural roles. Students are provided with the opportunity to receive instruction in theory as well as advanced techniques from experts in addition to principal instructors of their choosing. This multifaceted program is notable for the interrelatedness of the perspectives provided in this way.

Design Program: Architecture Course

In the Architecture Course, undergraduate design studies are applied to deepen students' creative skills and to carry out research that is aware of the social context in which concepts of architecture exist. Students pursue their research and project work through the guidance of faculty members whose studios reflect their respective fields of expertise. The assistance of teachers in related fields widens the breadth of research performed by students. Second-year students work on their thesis project, using as a foundation the project that they presented as a summary of their first year of study. Students can also participate in professional courses that include architectural design practice and internships which fulfill the 2-year work requirement of the First-class Architect Examination.

Design Program: Science of Design Course

This course approaches topics of design theory, design history, and the theory and history of form and color, from social, human, and cultural perspectives. The Course also examines the connection between these areas and technological advances in information and communication and societal changes, particularly in industrial structures and lifestyles. The rapidly growing fields of information- and media-related design, social design, and grand design are discovering various problems of new and different natures, and opening up new areas of research. In order to understand, solve, critique, and present design proposals for these problems, ways of thinking and methodologies for holistic approaches are required.

Design Program: Imaging Arts and Sciences Course

We are now in the age of the image, in what some call a century of images. It is an era of mass-produced images, and while it is an era where high-quality imagery is to be found, the reality is images have come to pervade all areas and aspects of society without regard to form or function. In the Imaging Arts and Sciences Course, students analyze the various forms and functions of the visual images in contemporary society, while thinking about their meaning and the possibilities they possess. The possibilities of imagery as personal expression and as social tools are pursued and developed through wide-ranging research.

Design Program: Photography Course

Art today in its many manifestations is confronted by a society that is frequently chaotic and ill-defined. The creative realm of the photograph is also undergoing a revolution. Digital technology has joined traditional chemical photography as a means of photographic expression, while the all-encompassing global network of the internet is starting to have a marked impact on how photos are circulated and presented. Today, as other contemporary art domains move ever closer to the realm of filmic expression, we must take an integrated, multidirectional approach to the contemporary photography environment and join in contemplating ways to link it to new modes of expression. The contemplation and practice of photography in these ways is the raison d'etre of the Photography Course.

Design Program: Design Informatics Course

Our continually developing, advanced information society is bringing about creative awareness and technological innovation in information systems. The Design Informatics course has started a new education program that has set two complementary core areas of study, based on raising awareness of the knowledge of design as an over-arching technology: practical research related to creative leadership, and design research for broadening one's experiences.
At the same time, professionals may also join the program as their participation brings their real-world work experiences and awareness of issues with a desire to further their education in a contemporary learning environment. This new design program, which can be experienced in our international and creative learning environment, allows experiential projects to be carried out where problems can be identified and new solutions with social applicability in mind can be proposed, cultivating students with the advanced skills necessary to excel in international society.
