Developing Human Resources Who Will Contribute to Society and Build the Future through Advanced, Wide-ranging Research

The Graduate School of Engineering was established in 1966 with master's and doctoral programs in 9 majors. In addition to these, the Cooperative Major in Nuclear Energy (master’s and doctoral programs) was established in 2010 together with Waseda University. The master’s program has a capacity of 216 and prides itself on the high level of education and breadth of research undertaken by its students. The Graduate School of Environmental and Information Studies was established in 2001, and currently offers a master’s program with 2 majors, and a doctoral program with 1 major and 2 fields of study. The graduate school carries out tireless leading-edge research in the fields of environmental and information studies.

Major in Mechanical Engineering

For the Major in Mechanical Engineering, in addition to the 4 main systems of material mechanics, machine dynamics, internal combustion engineering (thermodynamics), and fluid mechanics (fluid dynamics), materials engineering, which relates to materials and processing, and precision machine engineering are also available for a total of 6 courses of study. This wide range of research opportunities related to mechanical engineering cover all the fundamental concepts behind “mono-dzukuri”, the art of craftsmanship. Each course emphasizes creative research and education with a holistic viewpoint for approaching today’s advanced, complex technological developments.

Major in Mechanical Systems Engineering

This major focuses on the integration of cross-disciplinary technologies from multiple fields of engineering such as mechanical engineering and electrical and electronic engineering, which clearly differentiates it from other programs in the graduate school such as the Major in Mechanical Engineering.
The Major in Mechanical Systems Engineering is comprised of three pillars of study. These pillars become the foundation for cross-disciplinary study among the 8 primary fields of engineering . They are machine dynamics, material mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, control engineering, electronics and electronic engineering, information engineering, and materials science.

Major in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical and electronic engineering concerns fundamental technologies for contributing to realizing stable energy sources and comfortable living, and for building an advanced, sustainable society for the future. We strive to train human resources who can contribute to the development of society by developing revolutionary technologies which can overcome the constraints of our limited energy resources. Electrical and electronic engineering concerns fundamental technologies for contributing to realizing stable energy sources and comfortable living, and for building an advanced, sustainable society with the future in mind. We strive to train human resources who can contribute to the development of society by developing revolutionary technologies which can overcome the constraints of our limited energy resources.
The field of electrical and electronic engineering encompasses a broad range of fields, including technologies for semiconductors, robots, and home appliances, as well as the technologies behind infrastructure such as power generation and railroads.

Major in Biomedical Engineering

As the overall age of people in society continues to rise, advanced medical engineering technologies are developing areas such as improvements in the quality of daily life, medical care at home, and welfare. There has also been a growing emphasis on knowledge related to human beings and other living things in the fields of automobiles, home appliances, and robotics. In training students to excel in using such approaches, knowledge in various fields beyond traditional engineering will be required. In the Major in Biomedical Engineering, learning centers around professors and facilities related to the research of electrical and mechanical engineering. Students also learn alongside professors of medicine and biology, using actual medical and biological laboratory equipment to carry out original education and research. This allows us to pursue our objective of training human resources who can develop practical technologies that support safe and secure societies for humankind.

Major in Information Engineering

The Major in Information Engineering covers education and research related to the technologies for supporting our advanced information-dependent society. IT (Information Technology) has been used to describe the technologies that support our information-dependent society, but as our world’s societies advance the interconnectedness of information-centered global networks, its supporting technologies have come to be called ICT (Information and Communication Technology). This major covers ICT and specifically covers a wide range of studies that integrate computer science and information communication technologies. Through the support of the Departments of Computer Science and Information and Communication Engineering in the Faculty of Knowledge Engineering as supervising departments, a specialized academic system has been constructed which links the undergraduate and graduate schools.

Major in Architecture

The study of Architecture is not limited to only engineering, but involves a broad range of fields including sociology, economics, history, and physiology. Notably in recent years, the study of architecture has grown in scale to address the pressing need to respond to the Earth’s environmental problems. The Major in Architecture takes a multi-faceted approach to these wide-ranging concerns in providing students with specialized knowledge and skills. Students affiliate themselves with one of 6 courses: Planning in Architecture, Architectural Design, Planning of Urban Environments, Architecture Structures, Building Materials and Construction Methods, and Architectural Environments and Services. Along with specialized studies in that course, students are encouraged to think comprehensively to recognizing the role of their own research themes in the context of the architectural needs of society and their vision for urban landscapes. This major is also recognized as a graduate school program whose courses fulfill the work experience requirements (1 or 2 years) of the First-class Architects Exam.

Major in Civil Engineering

Cities go through transitions along with the development, rise, and fall of governments, economies, and local societies. In times of expansion and development, construction becomes a primary activity, and when a city reaches maturity, social demand grows for environmental improvements, urban renovation, the renewal of infrastructure, and the development of disaster prevention. For the Major in Civil Engineering, research and technology development activities reflect the contemporary needs of Japan’s cities, offering courses in Structural and Safety Engineering, Disaster Mitigation and Reduction Engineering, Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineering, Water Environment Engineering, and Infrastructure Planning and Management in Civil Engineering.

Major in Systems Information Engineering

In our modern society, the concept of providing high-quality products that consumers purchase has shifted to providing services and experiences that accompany such products. In other words, products must now be designed comprehensively with associated services in mind. The creation of such comprehensive systems requires technicians who have mastered specific technologies and also possess the ability to analyze the relevant technologies to be able to organically integrate them into a single system.

Major in Chemistry and Energy Engineering

The objective of the Major in Chemistry and Energy Engineering is to train engineers who can contribute to realizing the next generation of energy technologies for society from a chemistry viewpoint. Education and research covers the substances, materials, devices, and systems related to energy in a unique graduate studies program unrivaled by any other in Japan. The development of technologies for highly-efficient sources of energy with low environmental impact requires support drawn from the advanced specialized knowledge and techniques in the fields of chemistry and closely related science and engineering fields.

Cooperative Major in Nuclear Energy

In addressing our world’s need for establishing safe sources of energy for our future, it is vitally important that we train human resources who can work with nuclear power generation and harness new forms of energy, as well as individuals engaged in accelerators that use radiation and other radiological applications. This has never been truer in light of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. There is an urgent need to train human resources who can forge forward towards realizing nuclear safety and the advancement of radiological technologies. In this background, Tokyo City University developed the Cooperative Major in Nuclear Energy together with Waseda University. This major provides a diverse curriculum for the acquisition of the basic knowledge required for study in related fields highly relevant in our modern era, as well as how to integrate this knowledge with that of other fields. Apart from technology, guidance is also given in other areas such as safety, ethics, and risk management to train human resources that possess both technical skills as well as compassion and empathy.

Communication Information Process Course

This curriculum course in the fast-developing field of information process engineering focuses on education in fundamentals to train engineers capable of creative thinking. This course is taught by faculty affiliated with majors such as Information Engineering and Systems Information Engineering.

Advanced Nanotechnology Device Course

This curriculum course provides a fundamental understanding and application skills for working with advanced nanotech devices. Hands-on learning through business internships and lectures on topics such as international technology management theory will train independent, globally-minded engineers and researchers. This course is taught by faculty affiliated with majors such as Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Chemistry and Energy Engineering.
