Specialized Education in 4 Majors

The Faculty of Economics at Saitama University will fundamentally restructure its undergraduate education system for the 2015 academic year to introduce a specialized program comprised of 4 majors.
Students studying under this new system will be able to acquire specialized core academic skills along with general-purpose knowledge from a variety of perspectives. Each major also has a graduation research project requirement in which students will identify an issue and develop solutions on their own, then write a report that backs their findings. This system allows students to refine the capabilities needed in the contemporary business world. The new system also incorporates various approaches that nurture students' ability to excel in our global society and extend their global reach.
We at the Faculty of Economics hope that students learning in our new system will grow in line with our school's educational development mission: to nurture talented individuals that can identify issues, analyze them, and provide solutions. This will allow them to participate actively and boldly with vision in our highly competitive globalized society.

Following enrollment, all students will take "Tools Courses" which provide methods and information about study at the university, as well as "Introductory Courses" that cover more specialized knowledge in their field of study, and pre-seminars. Pre-seminars are a chance for students to refine their study methods and thought processes as they relate to a wide variety of social sciences in a face-to-face setting with their peers and faculty members.
Once these fundamental studies are complete at the end of their first year, students select a major for their studies. Each major has compulsory regular and elective courses, seminars, and graduation research projects where students progress within their field of specialization over several stages. Seminars and graduation research projects involve independent learning where students themselves indentify issues and formulate solutions. These logical thinking exercises help prepare students with the abilities needed in the contemporary business world.

Also, as a way to develop multiple perspectives for approaching issues, students will select a "minor" and systematically study in another major's courses. In addition, as part of developing students' global abilities, each major has mandatory English language classes, and as an elective course shared between all majors, we offer a "Japan Studies" class that is taught in English. Finally, our Global Talent Program offers a variety of courses from the time of enrollment through graduation for students who want to maximize their global abilities.

Major: Economic Analysis
Becoming an Economist

Economics is an analytical tool for understanding the real-world complex contemporary issues observed by individuals, both in Japan and throughout the world. The major of Economic Analysis will provide students with a firm grasp of the mental analytical tools which are acquired through interdisciplinary, systematic study of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Economic History. By applying these acquired analytical tools towards actual specific issues, each student can develop their own positions on those issues free from the influence of the mass media or others' value judgments. This can be a real thrill and is why the study of economics is so appealing.

Major: Global Business and Social Development
Understanding the World in the Age of Globalization

In this major, economics, business management, and society are studied from a global perspective. Through these studies, you will gain the ability to make global business commitments and understand the role global business plays for developed countries and developing countries, as well as the circumstances of various societies around the world. You will acquire the specialized academic fundamentals needed to have the vision to be able to contribute to sustainable social development. Study in this major provides opportunities to address issues such as why overseas business activities are necessary for Japanese companies, and whether economic growth in developing countries can be achieved at the same time global environmental problems are also addressed.

Major: Business Innovation
Companies Changing Societies

In the major of Business Innovation, the ways in which corporate entities and non-profit organizations build economic activity are studied. Currently Japanese companies are facing severe challenges. One of the reasons for this situation is that the competitive environment has changed within the context of ongoing globalization. Companies continue to frantically search for ways to leverage their strengths and implement reforms, but it is extremely difficult to determine what needs to be changed, and what needs to kept as it is. There is a demand for those with the ability to objectively analyze the business climate Japanese companies find themselves in, and then implement reforms as needed. Times of crisis, such as the severe business climate facing Japanese companies, can also be thought of as times of opportunity. Please join us and gain the skills needed to undertake proactive reform and seize the opportunities before us.

Major: Law and Public Policy
Using the Law to Create the Best Policies

In this major, students will master the fundamental academic skills for the basic foundational and logical thinking that pertains to laws, the development of one's legal mind, an understanding of the unity of law and public policy, and the ability to establish, form, and propose public policies informed by the law in response to various societal issues. Students in this major will approach issues such as analysis of problems surrounding the reform of Japan's constitution, what legal knowledge is required to start and run a company, and the necessity of government spending for solving public problems.
