University of Tsukuba

The University of Tsukuba traces its roots back to a teacher-training school which opened in 1872. This was followed by the opening of the Tokyo University of Education in 1949, and in 1973 the university was relocated and took its current name, re-founded with the aim of building an academic community that extends across Japan and throughout the world.
Dr. Jigoro Kano, who is known as the founder of Judo, served as the principal of the Higher Normal School and the Tokyo Higher Normal School, which were the predecessors of Tsukuba University, for 25 years. He advocated the philosophies of "Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort” and “Mutual Welfare and Benefit", as well as various educational initiatives such as realizing personal growth through the practice of Judo, the expansion of school education throughout Japan, the active intake of international students, and the development of sports education in Japan. Dr. Kano’s vision revealed not just an education plan for his students, but a model of education for universities in general for nurturing the talents of students and for bringing Japan to prominence on the global stage.
The University of Tsukuba counts among its alumni both Nobel Laureates and Olympic gold medalists. Nobel Laureates include former President of the university Dr. Shin-Itiro Tomonaga and former President of the University of Tsukuba Dr. Leo Esaki (winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics) and Professor Emeritus Dr. Hideki Shirakawa (winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry). Twenty-four Olympic medals have been won by University of Tsukuba students, including those won by Ayumi Tanimoto, winner of two consecutive gold medals in women’s Judo.
The University of Tsukuba will continue to strive to keep ahead of our ever-changing modern society, developing new educational and research capacities and organizational operations that are highly-adaptable, diverse and globally-minded.

About the Japan-Expert Program

The University of Tsukuba has established the Japan-Expert (bachelor degree) Program to train international students who possess a Japanese outlook to further Japan’s culture and society, and hope to find employment at relevant companies in Japan or in their own countries.
Having our university selected for the Top Global University Project by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan was the impetus for putting this program together. Four courses of study have been established―Agricultural Science, Healthcare, Art and Design, and Japanese Language Teacher Training. Each course is designed for international students interested in Japan, aimed to provide them with the expertise and critical thinking skills they need in Japanese to detect and solve local and global issues related to their respective fields. This includes acquiring specializations in agriculture, healthcare, Japanese art or Japanese-language teaching after acquiring advanced Japanese-language skills and understanding Japan’s culture and society.
We have expanded opportunities to take the university entrance examination for this program to students unable to do so up to now because of their lack of Japanese-language skills by easing the Japanese-language requirement and focusing on Japanese-language training for half a year after enrollment. We look forward to receiving applications from people who want to serve as intermediaries between their home countries and Japan.

Distinctive Features of the Japan Expert Program

1. Acquiring specializations in four courses
The Japan Expert Program offers four special courses, which are Agricultural Science, Healthcare, Art and Design, and Japanese Language Teacher Training to develop expertise of international students. Normally, most of the bachelor degree programs in Japan require applicants to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) competence level of N1. However, this program accepts students who have JLPT competence level of N3 or higher (i.e., N2 or above for applicants of the Japanese Language Teachers Training Course).

2. Intensive Japanese Language Instruction
Japanese language classes are conducted intensively to enhance Japanese language skills in order to understand major subjects. In an effort to acquire comprehensive Japanese language skills, classes in grammar, Kanji, listening, speaking, reading and writing are conducted by full-time instructors.

We offer not only intensive Japanese classes, but also specialized Japanese language in the major for each course in order to provide students easier transition to learning their major subjects.

3. Internship Program to foster practical abilities in the field
We provide internship as a required subject for each course in order to foster abilities of students in the field.
The internship program provides field experiences for each course in cooperation with external organizations and companies to support finding employment in Japan.

Agricultural Science Course

Our goal is to provide students with agronomic expertise related to biological resources―the foundations of human existence and safe, affluent lifestyles―while they acquire specialized expertise with local as well as global perspectives pertaining to agriculture and forestry, as well as the communication skills and ability to understand different cultures required for overseas cooperation related to agriculture and forestry. Further, we provide training that imbues people with broad, rich character, particularly the ethics related to agriculture and forestry, and foster individuality and enthusiasm for learning.

Healthcare Course

Our goal is to give students an academic grounding in healthcare so that in addition to their understanding of their own countries’ cultures, manners and customs they can take on roles as planners and administrators, as well as healthcare technology developers or engage in education or research. Note that this course is not designed to provide nursing qualifications, but rather to train people to be leaders in medical care policy in healthcare-related sectors.
