SOPHIA in the World

Founded by the Jesuits in 1913, Sophia University has been a pioneer in international education in Japan, attracting students from all over the world. In 1949 Sophia established the first program in Japan taught entirely in English, and it continues to lead the Japanese academic world in offering international programs.
Sophia is located in central Tokyo, near Japan's political, financial, business, and cultural centers.

Pioneering International College Education in English

Sophia students are diverse in background. Comprising over 50 nationalities, they include students educated at Japanese and international high schools in Japan, as well as both degree students and exchange students from all over the world. The mission of the Faculty of Liberal Arts is to prepare such students to participate actively in international contexts and organizations. The Faculty's academic programs are designed to equip graduates with the intellectual acuity, linguistic abilities, and cultural skills necessary to take the lead in bridging differences and promoting understanding in today's increasingly multicultural and international world.
Centered on courses in comparative culture, international business and economics, and social studies, the broad interdisciplinary curriculum of the Faculty of Liberal Arts aims to extend students' general knowledge while developing their critical thinking. A wide range of courses on Japan enables students to understand both present-day Japan and its traditions in a global context.

Degree Program
Outline of Study

The curriculum of the Faculty of Liberal Arts enables students to acquire a strong academic foundation and intellectual orientation before selecting a disciplinary major. During the first year, students develop their writing and analytic skills, and take introductory courses in a range of academic disciplines. In their sophomore year, students select one of three majors (Comparative Culture, International Business and Economics, or Social Studies) in which to concentrate. In the junior and senior years, students take advanced courses in their selected major as well as continuing to study in courses outside their major. Many students also take advantage of the many short-term and long-term study abroad programs to enrich their educational experience.

Non-Degree Program including Japanese Language Courses
Outline of Study

Non-degree students are those who enroll in Sophia University for one or two semesters (up to two years) to take courses and obtain credits but do not intend to receive an academic degree. Courses offered in Engliah at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Japanese language intensive programs are available. For admission information, please go to:

January Session in Japanese Studies
The new program strating January 2014

Sophia University will start a new 3-week program in January 2014 in the Faculty of Liberal Arts. The aim of this program is to increase the number of students from Oceania and promote our globalization and diversity.
This program mainly focuses on studying Japanese media and business and Japanese language, and has been designed for Australian university students who are able to come to Japan with funding from the AsiaBound Grants Program. Students not part of the AsiaBound Grants Program can also be admitted if there is still availability.

Summer Session in Asian Studies
Experience Japan in the Heart of Tokyo!

For more than fifty years, Sophia University's Summer Session in Asian Studies has been providing students from around the world opportunities to study in Japan. Over the years, more than 10,000 students have attended Summer Session lectures. Many former participants of the Summer Session have gone on to pursue careers related to Japan.

Summer Session in Japanese Language
The new six-week program focus on Japanese language

This program is designed for students who want to improve their Japanese language proficiency through intensive study in Japan. Students will study Japanese at the beginner or intermediate level in an international environment in the heart of Tokyo. Alongside the Japanese language courses, a Japanese Studies lecture series will provide students with insights on Japan’s culture, society, economy, and history.
Summer Session in Japanese Language participants earn four credits from Japanese language courses and one from the lecture series (total five credits).
