For Human Dignity (Hominis Dignitati)

Nanzan University is the only comprehensive, co-educational Catholic university in Japan’s Chubu region. Nanzan’s founding ideal was to provide education based on a Christian worldview to cultivate people to respect and advance human dignity. This ideal is embodied in the university’s motto of Hominis Dignitati, a Latin term which translates as “For Human Dignity”. Christianity teaches that humans were created by God with a “dignity” that is inviolable; each one of us has irreplaceable value and rights by virtue of being human. Nanzan’s motto encapsulates the idea of living with a firm grasp of and respect for this human dignity.

Center for International Education

The Center brings a broad international outlook to the provision of support for international students studying at Nanzan University, and for Nanzan students seeking to study at educational institutions outside Japan.

Koryu Kaikan

Both the Nagoya Campus and the Seto Campus have accommodation facilities known as Koryu Kaikan, where international students and local students live together. Local students interested in assisting international students with life in Japan can apply for residence in these facilities. Applications are taken at the Center for International Education on the Nagoya Campus, and the No. 2 Office (International Exchange Section) on the Seto Campus.

Japan Plaza

Japan Plaza is a communal space where Japanese is the only language that may be used. It was established to provide international students enrolling at Nanzan University from overseas with regular opportunities to interact with Japanese students in Japanese. Japan Plaza offers a comfortable, informal environment for international students to encounter everyday conversation beyond textbook Japanese, and for Japanese students to interact with peers from other countries in Japanese, their native language.
