Continuing the search for the essence of humanity in one of Japan's best traditional liberal arts programs

The Faculty of Letters at Hosei University is regarded as one of Japan's best traditional liberal arts programs, with a history of over 90 years since its founding. The Faculty of Letters has the widest scope of any of the programs at Hosei University, covering the fields of literature, language, philosophy, psychology, history, and geography. Through our continued pursuit of the essence of humanity and culture from many different perspectives, we have graduated a diverse body of highly trained scholars.
The Faculty of Letters concerns all things related to humanity and our existence. While some may feel that liberal arts studies tend to be abstract in nature, it can also be said to be a process of developing concrete ideas through writing, holding in-depth discussions to form one's own conclusions, and engaging in debate with others to develop communication skills and the ability to express oneself. In other words, the Faculty of Letters is a place where one can acquire the fundamental skills required for leading a productive life in society. Students are able to immerse themselves in research of their choosing, whether it be in liberal arts, or in fields of science as well. In the Faculty of Letters, students can choose studies in line with their interests, and are provided with an education that matches their unique individuality.
