Making our Future Stronger Through the Traditions of Philosophy

The beginnings of Toyo University can be found in the Philosophy Academy, which was established in 1887 by the philosopher Enryo Inoue. In an era where only the elite of society were able to receive an education, his school was a place for the higher education of all people.
Toyo University carries on the traditions of that school, and has opened its doors to the world and is actively taking in international students. Here, international students can find a world-class education that transcends borders and cultures, bringing together like-minded, motivated individuals in a comfortable and supportive learning environment.

Learning about today's modern economy

Study in the Faculty of Economics combines foundation studies in the theories of micro- and macro-economics with the pursuit of knowledge surrounding Japanese and global society. This is done through the identification of economic phenomena currently occurring within society from a holistic point of view.
The Faculty of Economics at Toyo University has set a curriculum that allows students to build their own platform for study based on their interests within the field of economics.

Department of Economics
Emphasis on theory and proof through demonstration for a solid education in economics

Students take part in seminars from the first year, learning the study methods, report writing techniques, and debate skills required for higher learning. These skills are then put to the test as students take part in report presentations and debates held for each seminar. Practical courses held in the first and second years focusing on acquiring a solid background in the fundamentals of economics give students the opportunity to learn through a problem-solving approach. The knowledge gained in these practical classes, combined with lectures, becomes the starting point for specialized study in students' third and fourth years.

Department of International Economics
Cultivating a broad perspective of the economies and societies of the world

While learning fundamental economic theories as a student in the Faculty of Economics, students in the Department of International Economics also study global economic and societal trends to gain a broad, international perspective. From the second year onwards, as students gain awareness of the issues facing the world, they engage in empirical study into the specific economic, trade, international finance, and business activities in Japan and around the world that has become the framework of the 21st century global economy.

Department of Policy Studies
Acquire policy-making and planning skills for designing the future of society

Study in the Department of Policy Studies covers economic issues combined with topics such as technology, society, culture, government, the environment, and media through a unique, advanced, and wide-ranging approach. Each student sets their own theme of study and applies the basic theories of economics to formulate policies in response to various social issues.
