Advanced research is performed at this center in the fields of biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, and molecular biology to reveal the mechanisms of highly-efficient solar energy conversion and reactions that break down water and produce oxygen in the photosynthesis that occurs in plants and algae, as well as for the development of crops that have enhanced resistance to environmental stresses and the creation of green energy through artificial photosynthesis.
This institute is open to Earth science researchers from throughout Japan, and is composed of 4 divisions: Analytical Planetary Chemistry, Experimental Planetary Physics, Promotion of International Collaborative Research, and International Visitor Research. Analytical devices and experimental equipment has been made available for use mainly in research related to the Earth's origins, evolution, and dynamics. It has been recognized as an international Center of Excellence by Japan's Ministry of Education, and joint research is being carried out by researchers from both Japan and abroad. In June, 2009, Japan's Ministry of Education certified it as an "Earth and Planetary Materials Science Center of Excellence".
