The Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology is established as a new multidisciplinary education and research institution to strengthen and merge the special departments in Marine Science and Marine Technology.
This Graduate School is divided into two courses, a master's degree and a doctoral degree. The courses for a master's degree comprising Marine Life Science, Food Science and Technology, Marine Environmental Studies, Marine Policy and Management, Marine System Engineering, Maritime Technology and Logistics, and Safety Management in Food Supply Chain, aim to educate and train students to become specialists based on the special and basic education given in the Faculties of Marine Sciences and Marine Technology.
The Doctoral Course consists of two courses of Applied Marine Biosciences and Applied Marine Environmental Studies and trains independent advanced professionals who can pioneer cutting-edge technology. Furthermore, the Course tries to enhance further education and research and to improve the quality of graduate student by collaborating with Fisheries Research Agency, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, National Maritime Research Institute, and Electronic Navigation Research Institute.
For better understanding the physiology and ecology of marine biota as a part of life science, this course provides education and research on the theories and technologies for the comprehensive and effective production and utilization of marine bio-resources, including the explication of the special mechanism by which marine biota can thrive in the oceans; the management, restoration and protection of bioresearches by making use of these mechanisms; the fishing system; the culture and breeding of fish; the instrumentation of the marine environment; and the creation of a useful marine environment. In addition, the Culture & Safety Management Course has been created to educate and train students to become excellent professionals.
This course provides education and research on principles and advanced technologies related to the production, preservation, distribution and consumption of foods, especially marine products. Especially, it conducts comprehensive education and research focusing not only on securing and promoting the safety and healthiness of foods at all stages from materials to consumption and improving the functionality of foods from the viewpoints of promoting human health and safety, but also on developing the designing and performing abilities required for the multidisciplinary development of technologies from the viewpoints of chemistry, microbiology, physics and engineering supporting the safety, healthiness and functionality of foods.
This course was established for the understanding of phenomena occurring in the marine environment, to explicate the change mechanism of the oceans, and establish environmental protection and restoration measures to reduce and remove the load imposed by human activities on the marine environment. To do so, it provides comprehensive and multidisciplinary education and research not only in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, information science, etc., but also in engineering for environmental protection, and the evaluation of phenomena from the viewpoint of social science.
This course consists of two fields: the field of marine policy and the field of marine management. Both fields practice "interdisciplinary education" including natural science, social science and marine science technology through the study/research of comprehensive management and policy of ocean/coast such as marine environment, marine resources, maritime transportation and marine information. It trains students to devise policies to study, utilize and manage the marine conservation and the utilization of marine resources comprehensively and systematically and to play a role in creating/developing an international order concerning the ocean. Therefore, the course provides education and training based on “international viewpoint” while placing an emphasis on “practical education” such as case method and field training.
The marine engineered facilities comprise a wide range of components such as these for ocean observation or surveying, and work equipment, ships and mechanical structures as well as their integrated operation system. From the viewpoint of harmony between marine engineered facilities and the marine environment, this course provides education and research in the development, designing, building and manufacturing technologies for engineered facilities under a scientific system focusing on systems engineering, environmental engineering and safety engineering.
This course provides education and research to materialize the safe operation of ships which are the main means of transportation by using advanced technology, to try to improve the efficiency of maritime transportation considering the conservation of marine environment and also to apply accumulated ship operation technology to new area such as the development of marine structures. In addition, the course analyzes logistics from a management and economic viewpoint as well as a social engineering viewpoint to understand the flow of products from production to consumption including surface, sea and air transportation, and carries out education and research on planning and design, operation management, and policy.
In response to globalization, food safety management is required to provide the appropriate measures in primary production, food manufacturing, food storage, and transport of raw materials to the final consumer. The Safety Management in Food Supply Chain (SMFSC) course aims to not only train students who can understand and have fundamental knowledge of food safety management, but also develop excellent professionals of food safety management/quality control in the process of food manufacturing, food processing, and food supply chain required to meet the needs of the society.
In addition, the SMFSC course is aimed at developing students’ practical ability to identify/analyze issues and devise strategies, eventually becoming leaders in the field of food risk management.
This course provides education and research on the explication of the unique physiology, ecology and functions of marine organisms in individual and population levels by using the most advanced techniques on molecular biology and chemistry. It also provides education and research of the development of advanced theories and technologies leading to the sustained production and highly effective utilization of marine bio-resources, including the composite areas of biological and food production. This course provides education and research on the advanced theory and the technical development concerning the elucidation, application and conservation of marine environment. The course deals with the elucidation and prediction of variation mechanism of the ocean, highly accurate measurement and prediction technology for variation and diffusion of substance composing marine environment, the development of marine resources exploration system, the development of maritime transportation system and thrust system, and the development of environment-friendly propulsion energy. Research for the suggestion of management methods from the viewpoint of marine environment conservation and the symbiosis between the ocean and humans is also included in the course.
